I'm an out of state applicant thinking about UCLA art school versus the school of arts and letters. I have very strong academics - 3.8 GPA, 2250 SATs - but worried my portfolio may not be good enough for the art school which I hear is very competitive. Any advice? I applied to art school but have until January 15th to switch my application to Arts and Letters. I really want to go to UCLA, any way possible! Thanks.

That Depends.

Are you majoring in Design or Art. If it’s design then it can go either way, but if you choose to go to an art department for design at an university then make sure it a has a reputable name, such a UCLA. If you plan on majoring in the Fine Arts then I highly recommend a traditional Art & Design school.

As for you Art & Design portfolio, depending on which are school your trying to get into art portfolio are look at more than your GPA and some don’t even required SATs or ACTs, but some do.

I don’t know what grade your in, but there art schools who love student that have the full package; grades, high test scores, superior art portfolio. You grades and SATs put you in the running for full or half tuition Merit scholarships at Art & Design school. If I was you, I would attend National Portfolio Day and or wait out a year and build a stellar art portfolio by doing some pre-college art classes.

Thanks, we’re talking specifically about UCLA art (not design). I heard with good grades and scores it might be easier to get into UCLA via art school since grades there tend to be lower than Arts and Letters. I ave until the 15th to decide which school at UCLA to apply to…Any help would be appreciated!

I don’t know what your looking for on CC with asking this question. Maybe you should had posted your portfolio so that others will be able to give you better feedback.

UCLA has art department which has design majors in it! I got accepted there but didn’t attend, herd that the art department was not any good and the student were not talented.

Good luck.

Admission to majors in the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture is based almost entirely on talent. Grades and test scores are secondary if the faculty committee finds your portfolio compelling.
