Art SChool

Does anyone have any experience or insight into admissions to the Art School? I am hoping to see my daughter admitted this fall, and I can't really get much direction from the website. I know the basics -- application and portfolio required, but does anyone know how much each is weighted? If a great portfolio can make up for weak grades?

Its art school. first, they see if you have the bare academic credentials to admit you, then they go by your art work/portfolio to see if your good enough for the art school. So you basically must pass two levels of admission. First, your grades must fulfill what the art school admissions office minimally wants in a student. For the second step, they look at your art, compare it to others (regardless of grades)/ see the creativity in your art, and then make a decision if or if not they want to accept you. so in the end, art school really doesn't care for good or bad grades, as long as you can survive the michigan curriculum and create the art they look for.

someone correct me if im wrong, but i believe a very interesting portfolio can easily overshadow weak grades.

Thanks for the reply, J89,That is what I am hoping for, but I don't know the particulars. If the artist shows a lot of promise, but the grades are weak (3.1) will they give the benefit of the doubt to the portfolio? General knowledge tells me that for LS&A, if the GPA is less than 3.5 there is not much hope, but I don't know anyone who has gone to the Art School per se, so I have no idea what level of grade point is comparable there.

Grades would not be as big a factor for Art & Design as they would be for LS&A, because it's a talent-based admissions program. I don't know where a 3.1 falls in the spectrum of students they admit, but I think you shouldn't worry overmuch about how she compares to LS&A admits.

Don't worry too much. Apply and if your artwork stands out, you will get in. The admissions office, if anything, should be looking more into which classes and extracurricular you have taken during hs career rather than your grades.

That is good to hear. I know her portfolio will impress, so hearing that grades won't be considered in the same way as LSA makes me feel much more confident for her. She loves Ann Arbor, and would love to go to Michigan. Go Blue!
