art supplement logistics?

i'm getting kind of confused since the common app has an art supplement, while some schools have their own. any answers to the following quick questions are much, much appreciated. thanks!

1) commonapp art supp (i'll coin the CAAS abbrv i guess, lol) or school-specific supp (likewise, SSS), or maybe even both? is there a best option?
2) CAAS says to attach an instructor rec & art resume--is that mandatory?
3) if you choose the CAAS, and assuming the adcoms decide to forward your art to the art dept, will the WHOLE thing (artwork, instructor rec, art resume) get sent?
4) if you choose the SSS, and attach a resume and supplemental art instructor rec to my commonapp, will all that get sent along with the artwork to the art dept?

lastly, i've been seeing posts about contacting (art) professors, so i'll rehash the questions:

1) how do you go about writing these emails? like, "hi, i was wondering about your dept...?"
2) if applying early (deadline nov 1), when is an appropriate time to do so?
3) is it too forward/annoying to ask if you can send them directly your supplement, in case admissions doesn't?

bump. can anyone help me out here?

Yeah, I’m confused about that too! Sorry, that I can’t help. I hope someone answers soon. I am assuming the school specific application is more preferable.

check [this other thread](<a href=“art supplement? - Applying to College - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/758059-art-supplement.html</a>)

Art supplements and attendant material are sent by mail usually. MIT
and some other schools allow online submissions for certain material.
