arts in sciences --> premed and also picking up French

hi again (2 threads in an hour, what what?)

so the thing is, I'm planning to do medical school later on, which means that during undergrad I'll have to take lots of science courses (bio, chem, phys, etc.). However, I was rejected by the faculty of sciences and admitted only to the faculty of arts.

Their departments are all really unrelated to my intended field of study and I was wondering if there was a way that I could manage to take all these needed science + math courses without outright transferring out of my faculty?

thanks so much! C:

oh, one more thing: how easy is it to the french language in montreal?

As I mentioned in another thread, you can do a major concentration in math in arts (slightly different requirements than a major in math in the science faculty), and your math courses will count as credits in the faculty of arts. In the faculty of arts, you’re allowed a certain number of credits in other faculties, so if you want to transfer to science without wasting too much time on unrelated arts courses, the math major seems like the most efficient choice. However, it’s not an easy major (and algebra and analysis are not for everyone…), so it may not be the wisest choice to keep a high GPA. So make sure you talk with an advisor once you make it to McGill and discuss your options.

And Montreal is a terrible place to learn French (too much English everywhere, the locals will switch to English the moment they detect the slightest bit of struggling to understand or hint of an accent when trying to speak French). If you really want to learn French, the best choice is to do immersion outside of Montreal during the summer (even McGill’s principal went to UQÀC when she got the job).

Re: learning French in Montreal. I took two summers of intensive French in Montreal. It would have been much easier to immerse elsewhere in Quebec but when it came down to Chicoutimi versus Montreal in the summer and the festival season… Having a francophone girlfriend was a big help though.
