I’m a junior and I’m going to be applying to Bucknell in the summer (likely ED) and I have a question about the Visual Arts Scholarship. I read somewhere that you have to be majoring in art to qualify for it and I was wondering if anyone knows if one can minor in art and still be considered? I’m really good at painting but I plan on majoring in psychology in college and because I’m not applying for FA, I was hoping this would help to ease the cost of tuition if I were to get in. Plus, it would look really good to admissions to be considered for the scholarship.

If you could help me, I’d be extremely grateful! Thank you!

it would be easiest to wait a month or two (april is not a good time to contact anyone in admissions or financial aid) and ask someone at the university directly.

however, from the two arts merit pages, it does not seem as if you have to major in art to get an award. it does appear that music majors must major in one of the two music majors and that dance/theatre/writing recipients must at least minor in the reflective area of study.

Hrmm, if that is the case, I guess I could always double major. I’ll contact them closer to summertime to get more information. Thank you for your help!

to be clear, based on what i can find it does NOT appear that you would have to major in art. there have been quite a few posts here about arts scholarships in the past, so hopefully someone else will be able to supply more concrete information.

Oh sorry, I think I misread it as you thought that you can’t apply unless you major. Oops! But even so, after exploring the specific application and the requirements, it does at one point imply you must major in visual arts to get that scholarship and that you do not need to major for the music, dance or theater ones. I guess it may be the only one requiring the subject as a major, which may be correct but it says in other pages that you don’t so I’m not sure how it works or which to believe. :/

you may very well be correct.

from the pre-screening page:

yeah… id send an email to arts.scholarships [at] bucknell.edu

I talked with the head of the art department today at the junior open house and I found out that you DO have to major to qualify for this particular arts scholarship. Another piece of information I found out about, though, is that for the merit scholarship program, they do NOT get to look over your portfolio or any materials you have sent for the scholarships until AFTER you have been accepted, so it has no effect whatsoever on your admissions unless you send extras with your application. In case anyone else is applying for those scholarships, I thought it would be of use for you to know!
