I am going to be a high school senior this fall and I was wondering how much the arts supplement is a factor in the college acceptance process. I'd be applying with a drama supplement for UVA. My test scores and GPA are average for UVA, but for an out of state student they'd be considered on the lower side. However, I do go to a top private school in my state and I've gone to many well known summer programs since 9th grade. Since I know my theater supplement will be strong, how much will it actually help my application?

You really won’t ever know how much the supplement helped your particular application because you don’t get any feedback afterwards. So, my advice is to submit a supplement as if it matters a great deal (it just might!) If drama is something to which you have devoted a lot of time and energy, a well crafted supplement will verify how accomplished and devoted you are. FWIW, my daughter submitted a supplement of paintings a few years ago and was accepted. We’ll never know if they loved them or laughed at them. However, since she had never won any recognition in art shows, it gave admissions a way to validate the quality of her work.

Thanks so much, in regards to your daughter thats a problem at my school too, since I’m highly involved in theater but our school doesn’t believe in “theater competitions” so I don’t know how to get recognition.
