Ever since our D attended the College. We've been showered with donation calls and letters. Am wondering U of C
parents here if you make donations or not, if so why and how much?

Yes. We (wife and I) donated. But not that much. We will do it till son graduates at which point I hope he takes over. We donate and will continue to donate to our alma mater as well.

Surely you’ve donated already in the form of obscene tuition payments.

I have only one rule about charity: it should go to people and organizations that are poorer than I am. Chicago doesn’t qualify under that rule. They’ve got billions salted away, but they ask for money because it works. People give to feel good, to feel liked, to feel they are a part of the university, etc, etc. But there are many more deserving charities, many people are starving across the world, many in involuntary servitude, many diseases causing untold suffering…

Oh sure, your donation won’t go to Chicago’s pocket but to the deserving minority student whose photo they prominently display, or no doubt your donation will go towards curing those terrible diseases that NIH also gives the school millions of dollars a year to work on (with univ management taking 60% overhead). If you believe that, I have a bridge on sale at a good price as well.

I don’t view the tuition payments as obscene or my son wouldn’t be going to UChicago.

I respect your rule for philanthropy, but there are many philosophies on giving. I also give to many many charities which help the poor directly including faith based and non.

I know a tremendous amount personally about eduction funding, funding through Government sources; these are very big topics with a tremendous number of complex issues surrounding them, yet I believe that parents and alumni should make donations to their schools within their means.

Now, as for the bridge. I am always looking for good investments…:)

Kaukauna, I donate, although I am both a parent of a current student and an alum. I am happy to donate to a great university that has given so much to me and to my son. I don’t donate tremendous amounts of money, but I give what I can afford.

You’re paying tuition! Don’t feel pressured to ‘donate’ further.
