I am currently a freshman at a top private college preparatory school in my area. My current GPA is a 3.3, but only because I am taking an honors science course usually taken by strong juniors. I am taking the maximum number of courses, two of which are honors classes, while the rest are regular classes, as my school does not have honors History or English classes for ninth graders. I had two unsuccessful campaigns for student government, one at the class level and one at the school level. However, I was appointed to be an alternate representative for my class government. I am not currently involved with my schools athletic program, but I plan to do two sports next year. I am a member of my churchs youth group. I am involved in my schools Euro Challenge team. Every week, I volunteer at my local library. I was cast in my schools spring drama production. Also, I was a judge in the elementary schools science fair. I am a member of my school band. For next year, I signed up for maximum number of courses, with one being an AP course and two being honors courses, as my school does not have honors level English classes for tenth grade. My science and math grades are my lowest grades, due to those two being my two honors courses, and my science course being a strong Junior level course. I don't plan to take physics until my Senior year, since that would be the only year I would qualify for AP Physics. Also, I plan on doing my school's Peer Leadership program in my Senior year. Next year, I also plan on participating in the Model Congress and Model UN programs at my school. Also, I am a first generation Filipino American, if that means anything.

Yes, but who are you? You have told us what you have done, but not who you are as a person. You do not get into MIT as a resume, but as a person, with goals and dreams.

Being Filipino will help, grades are very low esp. math and science, prob should wait to take those classes as a junior. Taking them early and getting C’s won’t be good. Hard to chance a freshman though, come back in 2 years when more stuff is definite and we can give you a chance (even if we are completely wrong)

It’s impossible to chance a high school freshman. But with a 3.3 GPA, your chances are slim even if you do go to a prep school. All of your ECs would start in 10th grade which sets you at a disadvantage as well. We dont know your legitimate GPA, SAT IIs, ACT, AP scores, etc. so it is virtually impossible to chance you. But just a heads up: my cousin lives in SoCal and received a full ride to MIT (Class of 15) with a 3.78 GPA and ~2280 SAT.

MIT does not offer “full rides” in the sense that people mean when they say “I was offered a full ride!” Your cousin was simply accepted. Congratulations to him/her.

MIT offers no merit-based aid whatsoever. Every student coming from a poor enough family gets a “full ride.” That’s how 100% need based, 100% need met aid works. Getting accepted is something special. The “full ride” is not.

^ cheme12, you are entirely missing the point. MIT doesn’t fill its class with 4.0’s and 2400’s (though it probably could) because these are not the primary indicators of how well someone’s going to do at MIT in the long run. You have to have more than just the ability to study for an AP exam in order to get through MIT.
