I'm currently in 9th grade and I am deciding whether to join ASB or Academic Decathlon next year and throughout high school. Which would colleges like to see more of?

As our student body vp, I’d definitely recommend asb. You’ll meet a lot of people, and be able to directly help out your school

It depends on what you’re looking for in an extracurricular. I’m not involved with ASB, so I can’t say much, but I am in Academic Decathlon and I really enjoy it. Academic Decathlon does involve a lot of dedication, but I love studying for academic competitions so it’s not really a big deal for me. Also, AcaDec is a small community of dedicated students, which is exactly why I like it. There’s a lot of camaraderie, and it’s a fun way to hang out with people who are just as crazy about academics as you are.

As a member of neither… I recommend ASB. In my experience, to look good with that, you have to be that insane work-a-holic for competition and you may get enough medals to drown you…

But academic competitions generally don’t hold as much “prestige” (even if you’re the best person in your county for several years in a row, not many people will recognize you as if you were the ASB officer or even an athlete in a sport that the school is number 1 in the region).

I’m not saying stay away from the academic competitions, I actually wish they were valued more. I’m actually saying that the ASB / athletes get more recognition for their work even though it might not be as hard as some extreme studiers. (proof by number of scholarships / high school awards)

I don’t know what ASB is, so I can’t speak for that, but I was Academic Decathlon this year. It was so much fun. Yes, it involves a lot of studying and hard work, but at regionals, people on my team who didn’t study still racked up lots of medals. At state, we also got a lot of medals with little studying. Plus, the information can be really interesting. Next year’s topic is World War 1!

I’m in both, and I really like participating in both activities I’m the class president for ASB, and I’m an Honors Team member for Acadeca. I absolutely love being in ASB & it continues to be the highlight of my school year. You have so much fun with planning events, being behind the scenes and in front of the school as well! With Acadeca, I love the sense of accomplishment it gives you. It requires so much self-motivation & dedication because at our school, it’s merely a club & therefore it’s all on you whether you want to study or not. Both ASB & Acadeca take up a LOT of time, but I thoroughly enjoy being in both!
