and would an asian person who's really committed to debate/politics stuff stand out? or is speech/debate itself too common and "normal" of an EC?

just be yourself

if that’s who you are then write it down

to OP, debating is definitely a really commonplace activity, regardless of race. But depending on how you portray what it is to you, it doesnt mean that it wont help you a lot.

i know what you mean because in college admissions Asians are often “stereotypical” … but I agree with spectravoid, be yourself, and you will end up in a place where you’re supposed to be :D. sounds weird, even i dont really like the sound of that… but if you want to truly distinguish yourself, do an EC that you like, BUT other asians dont. :P

most asians don’t debate but i doubt it will help you stand out much. they care more about the activity being unique rather than the activity being unique for a particular race.

However, do what YOU WANT. Don’t plan your ECs based on what’ll impress colleges! Plan them based on what you want to do.

I don’t know what you guys are talking about… where I live, there are hella Asian debaters!
