Asian Female+Poor=the worst case???

I come from a really impoverished family, my mother is the only person that actually works. I will also be a first gen. In terms of stats, I don't think they're different from my Asian counterparts. I know AA is a huge factor for admission for elite colleges, so will my stats put me into disadvantage?

these posts are so irritating

1st gen + poor + single income + female (if STEM) = profit

Asian male in STEM major has it worst.

@DrGoogle‌ What about Asian Female in STEM? I don’t think it’s a profit, though…

@foolish‌ I am just asking a question, if you find it irritating, you don’t need to answer it.

You get a slight advantage, it’s considered minority for some private schools. But I was thinking engineering in the STEM, not biology and other similar stuff.

@DrGoogle‌ Do you mean slight advantage in compare with Asian male only??I am into Computer Science by the way

You don’t have to state your race on the app; it’s supposed to be optional.

@foolish: It’s not irritating. Not every student is as knowledgeable as you are in the realm of college application.

DivineE, Consider applying to the LACs that meet 100% financial need, especially those with lower Asian student percentage (you can google the common data set of the school to get the info). Many are making efforts to increase their diversity, not just in race, but also in social-economic background and other factors. A lot of Asians have similar values and interests and they all aim at the similar pool of elite colleges, which may heat up the competitiveness in admission.

With good stats and low income, you may be qualified for the BridgeQuest program and some scholarships. <a href=“Financial Aid and Scholarships - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/

Your state university may not be the most affordable school. Do not let the myths of college application upset you. Seek advice and accurate info. Educate yourself on the college application process. Where there is a will, there is a way.

@DivineE, not just over Asian male, overall. For Computer Science, if you google internships for Microsoft or Facebook, female is considered in the same category as minority. So I think colleges are the same. Except some state schools may not be allowed to do that, so private schools do.

Check the women’s colleges that meet full financial need, like Wellesley, Smith, Mount Holyoke, Bryn Mawr, Barnard, Scripps, etc. Their admission rates are higher than those of the top 20 national universities.

@DivineE‌ , if your stats are up to it, try applying to both Questbridge and the Gates Scholarship.

Although the race question is optional, just be warned, if you’ve got an ethnic-sounding name, the admissions officers will probably be able to guess what race you are very easily.

Thanks a lot guys! God bless!

Yeah Female should override Asian for computer science. Poor and first gen should help as well, look to schools that meet full need .

^ I agree. The gender effect may trump the race effect in engineering.

Another vote for Questbridge. Please investigate. The benefits are astounding. GL
