Asian/Japanese Culture in the Twin Cities?

Hey Everyone,

I'm fairly certain I will be attending UMN this fall but I still had a few questions. Obviously I will meet more Asians being in CSE but I was wondering how Asians are represented in the cities. I'm very interested in Asian culture and will most likely be minoring in Japanese. Are there ramen shops or traditional japanese restaurants in the surrounding area/nearby campus? How about manga shops? (less likely, but its worth a shot). I will be joining the University's Manga Anime Society, however I'm trying to find a slice of that culture in the city itself. In general, how are Asians represented in the city? (Chinese, Korean, Japanese) Can students of the backgrounds be easily found on campus and elsewhere? Thanks for your input everyone!

There are A LOT OF Asians on campus especially Chinese. When you are taking your general class, you are gonna feel like you are in China. That’s how I felt like… In my Physics class, there were more Chinese than there were white people.
I’m Korean and there are a lot of Korean people on campus as well.
I haven’t seen that many Japanese people on campus though.

There are A LOT of good Asian restaurants on campus.
The one I recommend is Korea restaurant near the TCF stadium.
There isn’t any ramen or manga shop as I know of…

There’s a Japanese Student Association so you can join that to get to know more Japanese people!

I took classes at the U of M mainly split between CSE and ALL, Asian Languages and Literatures. There are definitely a fair amount of Asians on campus but far from a overwhelming amount even in CSE. I also agree that there are many good Asian restaurants around campus. I took ALL 3436 and 3437 two classes on 20th Century Japanese Literature in Translation. There seemed to be a decent sized group of students interested in Japanese culture. I took some other courses in ALL and there seemed to decent sized groups of students interested in Chinese and Korean culture as well (moreso for Chinese culture than Korean culture).
