@ThatOnePianist Did you apply also? What market are you from?

bump10char

Thanks for chancing me; I’m pretty bad at chancing others (and am new to CC), so take my advice with a grain of salt.

If your grades are going down for a major reason that’s not social drama or something (parent divorce, death of friend or relative, move, etc.), you can outline that in your essay or interview (if private school).

Also, if you get your grades up now and senior year, college people might see it as a sign of maturity and look upon it favorably.

You have an impressive PSAT score (223? wow), I think enough to get the scholarship, but unsure. If you do get to be a finalist for that, that’d help you a lot. Given that score, I’m surprised to see your SAT scores, because people typically increase score from PSAT to SAT. Practice, I suppose? Just keep spamming blue book on yourself and you’re almost guaranteed to improve, if you’re taking it again.

I don’t think “nominated for funniest freshman” is strong enough to be included–you’d want to sell yourself as highly as possible without overloading them with information

Don’t ask for recs from anyone that doesn’t know you too well; I’m not sure if principal recommendations would be that helpful unless you really know him/her. At my high school, I never talk to my principal/vice principal, but that’s just me.

Wow, your volunteer hours are pretty amazing.

I think certain colleges like UC Irvine would be easy for you (and Irvine is in the rich suburbs, with most of the students living off-campus; I wouldn’t come all the way from the East Bay area to go to Irvine, unless you plan on getting a car and driving down to LA on the weekends). USC and UCLA are reaches, but I think it all depends on whether you retake the SAT/improve and/or improve grades. Again, your volunteer hours/PSAT score gives you as much of an edge as your grades/SAT scores don’t.

I’m going to explain each one of these out a bit more than labling reach or percentage:
Also, what is it that you are interested in doing/majoring in?

USC: Reach, but certainly not as impossible for you as you make it seem. Are you thinking of applying early decision/action (idk which one USC has), or do you need to wait for financial aid? You easily into there middle 50% sats range, and have a great shot. I would make sure you demonstrate a lot of interest in USC (visit campus/interview/ect.) Are you in the top 10% at your school? that could help a bit too. You will be considered. - 50% chance.

CMU: low-Reach, I would say CMU is a bit tougher than the rest of you list, but certainly manageable. Plus if you are a its a bit easier, their ratio is very unbalanced. All your sats fall in their middle 50% ranges, though you may want to boost math a little (cause they are kind of a math/tech school) How many APs are you taking next year? They (like many universities) really care about rigor of classwork. Being Asian does you no favors here, but isn’t bad either. You definitely could get in here- 60%ish

Northeastern: Match/safety - This school should be close to a lock for you, although they have a ton of applicants. Your above most of their middle 50% sat scores, and your gpa is probably fine for here. Write a good essay and your in. Chances- 85%

Barnard-Reach- great school, if you want an all s experience in NYC. However is really difficult to get in. Being Asian, and from California may help a little here. And you do fall in the ranges SAT wise, but they do have a low acceptance rate, and a ton of qualified applicants, a very different school than your others. You really have to do well with more than numbers to get in here. -chances 50-60%, depends on the essays/recs

Pitzer-match/reach. your numbers are good enough to be considered. IT is one of the easier claremont schools, however they really emphesize the essays. Write good ones, and I bet your in. Chances 75%.

UCLA-Match numerically, but reach selectively- Your numbers are fine here, but you must be top 10 % of class, its something like 97% are top ten percent. Stay commited to your ecs, and hope for the best. Yuor numbers are there, but they take so few that you have to stand out. Chances-40%

UCI: Safety- I can see no reason why uci would not accept you, you might as well be a lock here- Chances 95%

UCSD: Match, assuming you are top 10% of your class- 100% of students at UCSD were top 10% in HS, which is crazy. Sat wise they are manageable, and right within your range. they do have a rather high admissions rate- Write a good essay and you should get in. Assuming you are top ten percent, chances = 85%

You have a very strange list of colleges, because they are all very different. The UCs make sense of course because you are from california, and USC is in many ways similar to the UCs, but beyond that its a mystery to me how you picked your schools. You have a small all s liberal arts college(barnard) and a small LAC in california (Pitzer) that are both best in humanities and such, as well as larger northeastern with its coop system, as well as CMU which is basically a tech school. I’m sure you have good reasons, but can you explain what maid you choose these schools. Also consider the other claremont schools (scripps if you like barnard and womens colleges), as well as northeastern LACs. Is money an issue? Cause thats the best reason to go to the UCs, although they are in a bit of trouble right now. You have a good shot at any of these schools, and I’m sure youll find the best one for you.

@jenni0z for suree! haha the end of my junior year is when i started posting too.
and what did i post? chancing me for ucla! funny how similar we are, kind of. :P

@jayjiggle I forgot what I posted! Sorry ):

@bchristian19, Thanks for your insight! I plan on majoring in English and Business and Communications. Of course I’m narrowing this down over summer, but that is the gist of it. I know USC and CMU have excellent business schools, which is why I plan to apply. I know that Pitzer and Barnard are excellent liberal arts colleges, which is why I plan to apply there for English. Honestly, the basis of Barnard’s appeal to me is that it’s in New York and I’d love to have a new experience going to school out-of-state. As for the UCs, I’m just applying because I live in CA and I might as well. I admit that I’m only genuinely interested in attending UCLA (for business) and UC Irvine (for English). I would be interested in UC Berkeley (for English), but that seems too big of a reach.

@everary Thanks for your advice, I don’t think you’re too bad at giving advice actually. I just put everything down that I could recall, I suppose, just to see which ones you guys would consider as (ir)relevant. I think I was having an exceptionally good day on the day of the PSAT. I know my principal and vice principal fairly well, since our school is small and I had to work with them a lot for clubs and what not [:

And for those of you who wanted to know about my senior year schedule:

AP English Literature
AP Calculus AB
AP Economics
AP Spanish Language 5
Tennis (S1, so I can practice more during the season)/American Government (S2)
Careers in Teaching (ROP - basically, we go to elementary schools and teach little kids)

Any advice from current juniors/seniors about my senior schedule is also greatly appreciated! (:

“Nominated as Funniest Freshman of 2011” - sorry, but even if you won, it can’t go on your college app, unless you somehow tie it into an essay. I wish it did! :D

Clean up your EC’s. You can only fit top 7 on CommonApp. Pick the ones you are most passionate about and those you have done for multiple years.

And being Asian at least doesn’t hurt you for UC schools. I would retake SAT for USC, CMU, and Barnard.

“And being Asian at least doesn’t hurt you for UC schools. I would retake SAT for USC, CMU, and Barnard.”

@qazplm Have you heard of affirmative action? Lol unfortunately UCs especially, for Asians, don’t do so well ):

@jenni0z LOL oh what I meant is that we have similarities! Posting “chance” threads around the same time, being girls named Jenny, etc. And, I too am asian. From Southern California though. If you hunt around I think you can see my stats somewhere. I’m thinking the UCLA acceptance/rejection stats thread…
P.S. There are a TON of asians at UCLA!!! Almost half I think? I could be wrong but when I visited this past Wednesday I was like O_O. At USC it’s more diverse but I have no idea what role affirmative action plays in that.

@jayjiggle Yeah, USC is a little more diverse from what I’ve heard. I know so many people that go to UCLA that are Asian haha. That and UC Berkeley and UC Irvine. UCLA = University of Caucasians Lost amongst Asians, UCI = University of Chinese Immigrants XD

Thanks for chancing everyone! Anyone else? I’ll chance you back if you leave me a link (:

@ Jenn

Oh my gosh that UCLA and UCI made me crack up lol. Everyone around me (who all happen to be Asian xD) started laughing too.

The whole UC thing being full of Asians is because the UCs are state-run and there’s no like “ratio” of diversity of people to accept. Unlike other places where there are actual like ratios (Asians just HAPPEN to be the lowest of all major ethnic groups).

Sigh. Break next week :x Craploads of tests this week on Thursday and Friday. My poor already-stomped on by massive elephants Gpa.

USC-tad of reach. You seriously do have a huge huge chance at it though. (my estimate: 70/100)

UCLA-tad reach.

UCI-in

UCSD-maybe in.

I can’t say about the other colleges, since I am not too familiar with them.

Why thank you Hairy Lemon. I LOL’d at your username haha

@That I really hope we both get BoA so we can meet each other irl! [:
