i'm ready to despair. chance me

junior asian in NY, things aren't working out like i hope. i;m just the average student. very very average. and fits in any social group.

born in China and moved here when i was 9...fo' shizzle. lived in Va for 6 years then moved to NY after my fresh year.

low gpa:3.5 stupid new school does not weight grade for aps. 5 for honors...100% and higher. and 4.3 for A+
low sat: 1800 plus change
good act: 33
satII: chinese 790..but it's chinese. us history 720 might take more but depends

AP planning to take a couple at the end of this year, and more the end of senior year. projecting 4-5 for us history and physics b

average course load. scattered honor fresh and soph, no APs, 2 AP and 2 honors junior year and planned for 5 APs senior year. would have taken harder course but because unfamiliar with the course of a new school, i was afraid to try, which screwed me in the end.

officers in a club, SCIOLY...maybe president next year. science olympiad got 3rd first year and 2nd place 2nd year for my event. 100+ hours volunteering. JV Football. chess club and ASIAN AWARENESS CLUB!

honors: ...couple of top 3 finishes at table tennis tournys. german test ranked 20th in region...the scioly finishes. academic athlete in fresh year. not much more...can't think right now.

i know i would get recommendations that are glaze with sugar from a couple of teachers.

no matter how i try i just can't seem to get good grades, and most people would say, that's okay if you have a high SAT...well that all went to hell. gonna retake but not sure how much i would improve.

thinking about Umich...that is my top choice but i think my chances are slim.
Va-Tech, Purdue, Penn-state, Binghamton,

major: Engineering maybe, architecture...maybe, phycology...maybe. undecided...probably

and please recommend other schools that might fit based on my status.

Thank y'all very much

bump10char

You're fine. That SAT is atrocious compared to your ACT, so just hide it. I believe all of those schools will take ACT w/ writing instead of SAT. Just try to compensate for your grades in other ways (it doesn't have to be the SAT).

UMich is a bit of a reach but still not out of the question, and you seem on track for the others. Stick with it.

thank you very much

anyone else

have you considered applying to the UC's? i agree with phpfan about the ACT score. If you are going to retake the SAT"s, though, maybe you should just try practicing by taking hte SAT over and over again as a study tool?
Also, most schools, if you apply as an engineering major, you will need to take a Math sat II and will need a better gpa/test scores. so be weary of that.
Otherwise, if you are going to take the stuff you say are, im sure you'll do fine.

ipam45: You cannot hide your SAT I score if you report your SAT II scores. A 33 ACT is outstanding and will probably get you into Michigan if you stay above a 3.5 GPA. You should be admitted to all of your target schools.

that is one thing i;m scared of, but i'm hoping that they would overlook it, since i took it pretty early too.

you play any sports?

Table tennis...and JV football my freshman year, i'm too lazy to do a varsity sport this year even thou i would think that a Letter would help.

despair until the point where you provoke
the f***king punchline before you have told the joke
sorry sunshine it doesnt exist
it wasn't in the top 100 list.

sorry, I'm not comfortable chancing people, but your title just reminded me of those lyrics a lot.

For Virginia Tech engineering, a 700 on the math would be nice. From our high school, even stellar students have been turned down to the engineering school, but to VA Tech in general, you are likely in.

i'm so much like you. my GPA is similar to yours...and i can't seem to do any better. it sucks. but i think you're pretty much in at V-tech, penn state may be a match, and same with purdue. don't know much about binghamton though.

yeah i feel you. it's like i can't even get a b anymore cuase that would just pull it down and i have to depend on crap class that i can get a+ in to pull up my GPA. damn should have tried harder earlier...now i know

Monday Bump...?

i have been looking at a few more schools so please chance me for these:
UIUC
RPI
Buffalo SUNY
Boston College
Uwisconsin Madison
Georgia Tech
and finally UT austin

anyone?.....

Obviously this all depends on your application, the strength of your essays, and so forth, but...

For the universities with which I am familiar:

UIUC - Good shot; they'll love your ACT score.
UW-Madison - Same as UIUC.
UT-Austin - Decent shot, though OOS admissions is small with the 10% law. Make sure you research UT before applying; it would be a big change from NY.
SUNY Buffalo - I'd say you're in here. Great college, but they're no where near as selective as, say, Binghamton. This should probably be one of your safeties.

I have no experience with the other schools; therefore, I shall end my assessment here. I would recommend that if you're truly undecided, do not apply to the engineering schools at these universities. Apply through the general colleges; you can always try for an intra-transfer later. Finally, please remember that admission to all of these schools is highly dependent upon other factors.

Do your research, stay positive, and try your best.

thanks you very much

do you play in usatt tournaments? if so whats your rating? (just curious)
