Asian Wanting to Get Into a UC

<p>I know the UCs are getting harder and harder to get into, especially for the Asian population. I've applied to all the UCs except for Riverside and Merced in the hope that at least one will take me. As an Asian myself, I've been told over and over that I should always expect the worst and that a high GPA is never a guarantee of admission to a UC. I have a 2200 composite SAT score, 33 ACT composite score, 4.07 weighted GPA, and extracurricular activities ranging from volunteer work, piano, and religious activities. With these credentials, I don't expect to get into Berkeley, LA, or SD, and I'm not even so sure about Davis. Plus, I didn't feel my two essays were that great.</p>

<p>To recap, here's what I think about my chances for each UC I've applied to:</p>

<p>Maybe I'm being a little too hard on myself, but I'm just preparing myself for the worst just in case. What are your opinions on the matter?</p>

It’s pretty common knowledge that the UCs have been implementing quotas on Asian Americans. And if you look at the admission statistics for all the UCs, they have been indeed declining. Unfair? Of course, but I’ve just got to make the best of my situation.</p>

<p>Your weighted GPA means nothing, due to all of the different weighting schemes out there, unless you are using the UC/CSU weighting scheme. Unweighted and UC/CSU-weighted GPA are more relevant.</p>

<p>In addition, admission selectivity varies by division and major (e.g. at Berkeley, the College of Letters and Science, College of Chemistry, and each major in the College of Engineering may have different thresholds for admission).</p>

<p>But you are only competing against other California residents, and those decisions will not consider race. Nor will the race of out of state (country) full payers matter. Being Asian will not matter, but where you live might.</p>

<p>I don’t think the UC’s take race into consideration when evaluating an applicant. Your stats seem all right, but it would help to know your unweighted GPA, since that’s what they look at. </p>

<p>I think you’re fine for SD and all the others, especially if you’re in-state. Cal and UCLA might be a bit of a reach, but you never know. Good luck! </p>

<p>Honestly, I think you have a good shot at most of those schools. Most admissions look at the all around student, so the EC’s should help you out a lot. Just make sure you have a well written personal statement to really sell yourself. </p>

<p>Your test scores are great. It ultimately comes down to ECs and personal statement.
