Asian with low GPA??? Help me please =(

Hi guys

I'm a Chinese female with relatively low gpa--3.7 unweighted
also i go to a Canadian school so there is no AP, whatsoever =(
SAT is 2100, SAT II s yet to taken...

should i give a try at ivy league schools? or is my gpa an automatic reject?

o btw im a junior now =(

thanks!

oh and also:

i've seen someone else posted that they take 5-6 credits per year?

I'm not familiar with the US system, but in my school we must take 8 credits per year...so how many credits do i give to university?

thanks!

Hey... it never hurts to apply to Ivy League schools, but they're probably going to be reaches for you. I'm a current senior and applied to the University of Pennsylvania Regular Decision with a 2100 and unweighted GPA of 3.80 (pretty similar stats to you) and got rejected. I got into and am attending Vassar College, however, so not getting into an Ivy League school is DEFINITELY not the end of the world and having stats around yours by no means signifies that you won't get into a top school.

Also, being from Canada, you'll probably be considered in a different light than me... also if you have diverse/interesting ECs your chances at an Ivy League school will definitely go up (mine were pretty typical for a high schooler). Best of luck with your applications! If you want any suggestions on colleges to look into (particularly if you're looking for LACs in the Northeast/New York/Pennsylvania/Maryland area), feel free to PM me.

guys help me out =(
...............

o also i see people with 99% on this board all the time

this is unheard of in my school, and my school isnt even that hard?

can someone tell me how you do it?

thanks!

thanks littleathiest

any other inputs please>?

especially on how you achieve 99%? really i need help plz =(

No idea... what's your rank? I think 3.7 uw is good if you took challenging courses and your rank is good. Actually I think 3.7 would be great. Up your SATs though, and rape the SAT II's, not kidding.

lol thanks FredFredBurger

My rank would be like 20/280 ish...

how does that look?

our school is in canada so it does not offer AP/honour
there are 3 levels of courses, C, M U
c=college, M=university and college U =pure university

i took all U's so far =)

3.7 is not bad at all. Stop feeling bad about that!! Don't let the college pressure get you down. Aim for schools like Georgetown or UChicago instead of an Ivy. They may be just as good.

Ivy is a no go unless you have some extraordinary talent. (maybe cornell, but they are hardly an ivy).

actually it all depends. I know someone who got all A's in high school. 4.0 unweighted. But she got a 2 in the AP Chemistry exam and 3 in Biology.. which means her school is a joke because a 2 gets an A.

my friend your gpa is not the automatic reject, it's your sat's
working on the gpa is easier just for your last symester get a 3.8-4.0 but for your sat's when we are talking about ivies they needa see 2200+ AT LEAST

Hey thanks guys!!!

i see, i'll work on my SAT and GPA =)

but my school offeres no AP (though i will take the AP calc BC this may through self studying ), does it hurt A LOT? ( i know it hurts, sigh)

thx!

Actually, colleges will know that your school doesn't offer AP courses. They compare your courseload to what is offered.

thx carpe aeternum! =)

any input on how to increase gpa to an unbelievable 99%? right now its like 93% ish........

bump ppppppppppppp

how to increase my gpa??? help =(

Working hard you mean, or are you asking for some kind of magical ways?

.......study? I mean, how else do you get better grades... Also, the kids on college confidential are the top of the top, so I wouldn't spend much time worrying about what you look like compared to everyone on here. You are a good applicant, and you are most likely going to to places... As you stand now, you are definetely above average. Of course, raising your GPA and SAT's won't hurt (might consider taking the ACT as well), however, I wouldn't say its urgent at all.

P.S. There is no magical formula to raising your GPA lol, maybe getting on the good/great side with your teachers, so if the case arrives and you have like .5 points away from an A-, they will look the other way and bump it up. Other than that, all i can say is just study more, but you should also enjoy your time during high school as well... it only comes once in a lifetime remember!

lol thanks guys!
