Asians and College Prestige.

PSU is an excellent school and an excellent value. With that said, is it considered in the same prestige class as Harvard, Princeton, etc? No.

Prestige by definition is: "The level of respect at which one is regarded by others; standing."

That is, it is defined by what someone and the public perceives it to be. For instance other Asian parents and students.

Some prestige is based on facts. Some of it is a myth. Certainly the challenge is to separate the fact from the fiction.

Props to all Asians regardless of the institution you attend.

Long after you graduate and are working in the real world, where you attended college will matter less, replaced by the importance of your character.

Where are you going frankie? What were your choices?

No Asian family I know has ever heard of Wake Forest.
It has no Asian prestige whatsoever.

FOB = fresh off board

I've always understood it to mean "Fresh off the boat," myself. I don't even see how "fresh off board" makes sense.

I already took care of the sarcastic, from my high-horse, response. :)

Wake Forest? Is that the basketball school?

^ How my dad would respond

They have a great team. That is true.

its FOB = fresh off the boat

board makes no sense whatsoever.

theherald, UCLAri ~ fresh off board does make sense, it means fresh of an airplane, i dont see many asian immigrants coming off rafts

University of Michigan? University of Michigan has business?

That would be my mom's reponse.

Few of my mom's quotes:

"Is Swarthmore a good school?"
"Why is Columbia sending you stuff?" (not "Columbia sent you stuff!!!)
"USC is a crap school."
"Syracuse is a third tier university too."
"Michigan..UCLA..Georgetown..Tufts..go to Georgetown! It's the best one."
"What are you going to do with an econ degree? Teach?"
"Only econ and business majors can become bankers. History majors end up becoming teachers or historians." (? weird. She was a language major who became a banker.)
"You can get you MBA after you become a teacher."
"What's Wharton?" (This seriously made me laugh my butt off.)
"Carnegie Mellon has undergrad business? I thought it was good for the arts."
"You know college is going to cost $60k if you don't get financial aid." (what?)
"NYU Law School? I've never heard of it."
"Since you can't get into UC's cuz you got a couple C's, you might as well go to the University of Michigan..."(?)
"If you don't go to med school, you'll end up homeless."
"MBA's are useless, even if they're from Harvard."
"You should become a doctor because they make a ton of money."
"You might major science in college, so why are you taking AP Enviro?" (At this point, we already settled that I'm going to do business.)

I didn't find out what Wharton was until last year

moi aussi. lol

HAHAHAHAHA OMG your mother cracks me up (especially the first one) Well, I'm going to USC and I never heard of it until... a month before I turned in my application.. cough

n88x,

You forget that the term was pejorative, and largely referred to poorer immigrants who came on boats because they couldn't afford airfare.

Wikipedia article on the subject.

"It was originally applied to European immigrants who had just stepped off of a ship."

By the way? QED.

UCLAri, in our modern day context, fresh off board makes a lot more sense, as i said before, not many Asian immigrants can row themselves from Asia to the US, and ive definitely heard from a number of people that it is "fresh off board"

You didn't even read the article, did you?

"fresh off board"............21 hits
"fresh off the boat"........252,000 hits

Yes, fresh off board seems to be quite common. ;)

Oh, another quote, I just remembered:

"Where's Claremont McKenna?"
"Economics is math." (hmm...I don't know last time I looked Econ was a social science)
"87 in math? How could you? Now you're a failure at life." (I'm like it's not that bad...I mean if I factor in homework grades I have an A- in the class, and I'm still in recovery mode from the class I dropped...precal Honors...the teacher was the devil)

Mother knows best!

Economics DOES require some math...
