LOL, you said "maths'. i've only ever heard Indian people say that in my life.

Uh, I think the word "maths" is used outside of the US in general, not just with Indian people.

You so funny (and original) - plus, how does that account for AFs?

Anyway, there are plenty of Asians in Asia who stink at math (and academics in general) and end up dropping out of school and not going to university (and end up working blue-collar jobs or even as gangsters, etc.).

Here - for immigrant parents (as for most immigrants), there is an emphasis on education as a means to achieve a better life.

They have higher IQs, on average.

We're good at math because our parents would beat the poo out of us if we aren't :P

On a more serious note, I don't know if any particular race is smarter. I'm first-generation Chinese but I'm only okay at math. Regardless, I got great grades in school because the alternative was not an option.

I think most of the Asians immigrating to the US are the best from their respective countries. Because I had friend in India who didn't give a **** about studying cause they could always fall back on their familys wealth.

Hmmm, at the highest levels I think caucasians seem to dominate math? Look at the fields medal winners (I know that's not the only important math prize, but it's a good sampling of the most important mathematicians recently).

Indians rule in the AMC 12.

Well most asians tend to think more logically. Also in countries like Korea, you learn Geometry in elementry school, ha-ha. What a joke, my dad said Geometry was a Joke when i need help, lol. Hes like, '' So easy, Piece of %&^''.

My parents make fun of me that people in 10th grade can probably help me with my hw and i'm in calc ab/bc ap.

Transformers...robots in disguise!

Maybe they are magically shielded from the influence of the media.

Shh!! Don't reveal all our Asian secrets!

Don't worry they can't understand.

we're good at math b/c it's shoved into our brains at a young age.

Don't you mean preprogrammed before we're activated?

we skipped evolution.

"Hmmm, at the highest levels I think caucasians seem to dominate math? Look at the fields medal winners (I know that's not the only important math prize, but it's a good sampling of the most important mathematicians recently)."

-you're kidding right? Terence Tao?

Pffft...evolution..We're intelligently design ;)

Good job citing a single mathematician. Real sufficient proof that Caucasians aren't dominating Fields medals.

Before Tao, the latest Asian to win was Shigefumi Mori from Kyoto in 1990. By my count, the Asians have only one 4 total Fields medals. Whites clearly dominate the Fields medals.

Then again...

Caucasians dominate prizes and discoveries. Asians dominate contests. It's always been that way.

Nope. Asians have only started to compete well in the Putnam competition relatively recently. Or perhaps you are talking about some other contest?

This comparison has nothing to do with skill, but more likely demographics. There simply were not Asians at the highest level previous to early 90s; immigration to the US + increased numbers foreign students coming to top universities has certainly changed the makeup of the top students though.

It's the Nature/Nurture interaction thru the influence of "GO". Fortunately, my father taught me the game at a young age.
