Asians

I was looking at Elon's site and it says that for the class of '10, only 2% was asian. I was just wondering about how much of the students are asian. Thanks to anyone that can help!

I'd defer to Elon Admissions on they're latest acceptance and enrollment numbers but my sense is that the percentage of Asians is lower than at some other universities with otherwise similar attributes. Feedback from current Asian students would likely be even more valuable. I have pondered your question myself as my bi-racial D (1/2 Asian) will be attending next year. When our family went to an applicant orientation program last Fall there were clearly more than 2% Asians attending the break-out sessions we did (Business) but that probably doesn't reflect Elon's incoming class.

The Asian demographics in NC are evolving, especially in the RTP area, and I think Elon is becoming an increasingly attractive option for other quailified NC HS grads that might otherwise have looked out-of-state if they didn't feel right with UNC or NC State. I suspect Elon's diversity will reflect this over time and the percentage of Asians will rise.

there really aren't that many i've come in contact with. however, a very large percentage of my high school was asian, so this could be a bit skewed

Yay for Asians at Elon! My daughter will be a freshman Music Theatre major in the fall and Elon was her first choice all along. We have visited four times already and we all love it more every time--and we loved it the first time we saw it! My daughter is Korean, adopted. There is another incoming MT student who is also Korean, not adopted. So that will be two Asian kids at Elon in the fall! LOL. Honestly, it IS the smallest minority population at Elon, but my daughter is used to it since we live in a "white" neighborhood and school district, so Elon will be nothing new to her except for being in the south, since we are from Syracuse. The weather has to be better at least! LOL! The kids we know who attend Elon, and those we have met who will be attending in the fall, have been universally friendly and accepting, so we are not worried about our daughter fitting in, no matter her ethnicity.

thanks for all your feedback! it helped a lot!

nydancemom, I agree with your take on Elon and hope it's a good fit for your D. The setting is definitely southern but, like more of NC than some may think, I suspect it may be surprisingly open-minded (non-judgemental) along with being welcoming, if not particularly multicultural. Good luck.

regarding what grantb has said (and im assuming thats grant berliner-- whats up kid! its ben k!)-- he hit the nail on the head.

my high school had a large percentage of asians, but even despite that, there really are very few at elon. i didn't even spot anyone of asian decent until over one or two months into the year.
