I'm kind of wary talking about the political orientation of Centre's campus. I wouldn't want to say anything that would change anyone's opinion of the school or it's students and professors. I will say that there are prominant showings of both sides of the political world. There are campus groups: Centre Dems and Centre Republicans. People are very open about their political views and there are always events going on that deal with so many different issues. This past year, we had a convocation that consisted of a political debate between 6 students: 3 Democrats and 3 Republicans. It was very interesting to watch and it was run very respectfully and professionally. Both groups got together on election night and watched the running results. Sometimes things can get heated, but nothing ever too serious. Professors are always very prevelant in both poitical campus groups, but they don't usually let their political views effect the class. Sometimes things are said in class, but we are college students. If you can't handle a difference of opinion and don't know how to get along with people or professors you don't agree with, then you're going to be in for a rough ride. College is about learning and growing up.. and politics is definitely part of that!

I am VERY happy with Centre's campus as far as politics go. I have my views and I have lots of people I can share them with at Centre which makes for a great learning environment!

Thanks for the responses C-girl!

When we visited in April, my son commented that it seemed to be a recurring theme in the campus newspaper that some students were complaining that many of the professors were more liberal than many of the students. One professor I talked with seemed to confirm this, but he said it was not a serious issue. I'm not trying to pin you down on the political "leanings" of the campus, but can you tell us whether "liberal professors" and "conservative students" are a significant issue on campus. Your response suggests that there could be "issue" in both directions, with "conservative professors" and "liberal students" as well. (A healthy mix of all of the above is best IMO.) Or did we pick up on a nonissue, that may have been something else, like a pet peeve of the newspaper editor.

I'm not really sure about this recurring theme in the newspaper.. I've never noticed it to be an issue. Concerning professors, I guess that you could say there are probably more "liberals" than "conservatives" among the faculty. I agree with the professor you talked to in that I don't think it really affects the classes greatly; it doesn't seem to be a problem. I do know of "conservative" professors that are very active in the Centre Republicans. To be honest, the issue is never really brought up in classrooms so it's not a problem. Like I said before, if something IS said, then the class deals with it. Just because Centre's campus may consist of many liberal professors doesn't mean that Centre itself is "liberal;" The campus definiately manages to stay neutral due to a stong showing from both sides on political issues.

Thanks again C-girl! You're doing a great job representing Centre!

Hello people from Tennessee I just recently moved from petersburg,TN(Near Fayettville) to Wilmore,KY with my mother so she can recieve a degree in ministry here at asbury and was wondering what would it take for me to get into a college like Centre?

Take challenging HS courses, AP or IB. Of incoming freshmen, 64% ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school classes. 86% ranked in the top 25 percent. For students submitting ACT scores, the range for the middle 50 percent is 26 to 30. For SAT scores, the range for the middle 50 percent is 580-690 verbal and 560-670 math. This information comes directly from Centre's website...www.centre.edu

Would knowing alumni from centre help me get in?

Knowing someone (alumni) from any college is a nice connection, but you definitely have to be accepted into Centre on your own merit.. don't count on anything being handed to you.

centregirl,
Hello. I have a few questions for you regarding Centre and your experiences. Here goes....
When do classes begin this school year? Have you considered studying abroad? If yes, why and where...if no, why not?
thanks

doddsmom, is dodds son still interested in Centre? D still has it very high. (I'd PM centregirl with your question.)

All, Centregirl has left for school. She has taken a job as the assistant volleyball coach at a KY high school and had to report for practice on August 1. I know she's been swamped for the last 2 weeks with moving and practices. I'm sure she'll be back on line before long :)

To answer some questions:
Centre starts class on Labor Day. Move in is Sept 4-5. This was an adjustment for us as our public school here in TN starts on August 1 and most TN state colleges start between the 2nd and 3rd weeks in August.

She is planning to study abroad during the fall 06 semester. She has chosen the Centre in London program. Centre offers many opportunities to study abroad and pride themselves on being in the top 10 schools by percentage of students who study abroad. Some of their programs include semester programs such as Centre in London, Centre in Mexico and Centre in Strasbourg. They also are affiliated with programs that study in other countries like Belfast, Ireland and also Japan. In addition, students can choose to do their winter term (Jan. 2-26) abroad, or summers.

If CentreGirl doesn't answer, I will do my best :)

I have been going nonstop lately. I'll try to answer as quickly as possible.

We start school Sept 5, move in the 3rd and 4th. I do plan to study abroad Fall of '06 in London. I think London is going to be amazing! There are two options for London: living in the middle of the city in a flat or attending Reading University. I'm going to stay in the city bc I think that's where I can get the most cultural experience. You live in a flat with one other person and have to grocery shop and all that nice stuff. You're really living on your own and still taking classes. Reading Univ is 20 minutes outside of the city by train, but I dont want to go to another campus, I want to see the city.

...any other questions? that seemed too simple to answer!

Our son continues to have Centre and Kenyon vie for the number one choice spot. He has started working on applications and essays. Centre is our first choice for him (we have family in the Louisville area) and we will remain overseas while he is in college. However, merit aid and our S's preference will probably rule the day.

Thank you Centregirl08 for the info.

I want to bump this back up so we can continue to bother Centregirl ;) Well, the real reason is that I think she provides excellent information, and I want everyone to have the chance to read and add to the thread.

I'm all for getting the Centre thread going again. DD continues to be very interested in Centre. She looks forward to an overnight visit there, but probably won't be able to do that until spring. DD, DH and I all loved Centre when we visited there this past spring. Centregirl, are you familiar with how the admissions office matches hosts with prospective students for overnights?

My D is still solid on centre, too so that makes three who will be applying. Has anyone sent the app in yet?

DD is so very close to hitting "submit" on her common application. The only thing holding her back is copying her essay from her documents and plugging it in to the application. I think she's trying to decide if she needs to make a change or two. Can you imagine Parent's Day at Centre with Curmudgeon and DW, Doddsdad, Doddsmom, SplashMom and DH? Oh, the fun we could have! :D

That sounds like too much fun - maybe I can convince D to look at Centre again.

Maybe I can get Centre back on S' radar screen for next year. His list just took a huge re-editing/bloodbath when he decided that the school had to have a football team. LOL.

I agree that it would be great for us to get together on Parents' day, but we don't have to wait till then. We can coordinate our April 06 visits with Keeneland's spring meet. A day at the races can be fun, and it doesn't have to be too expensive. Although, that's my backup plan for funding DS's college tuition. If he doesn't get enough merit aid, I can try to hit that trifecta.....It's strange, but the financial aid offices haven't been too keen on my plan. Maybe DS needs to look at UNLV? ;)

Iderochi and Firefly,
I can hear the conversation....Parent: "But you have to look at Centre again! That's where my friends' children are going! Don't you want me to have any fun?"

DS/DD: "I know all your friends' children are looking at it, but if they all jumped off a bridge, would you do it too? Did you know that within a few miles of Centre they have distilleries for Wild Turkey, Maker's Mark and Jim Beam? They even have gambling at horse tracks there!"
