LOL. Darling D saw all this and said, "Dad, you don't expect us kids to admit who are parents are and go find each other on campus, do you?" Well, honey. It's a small campus. I bet they can find you.

I had to avert my eyes to avoid the laser tractor beam of death . I can stll feel the heat on the back of my head, but at least my eyeballs didn't explode.

Centregirl,
Just in case you're around. Do the Centre dorms have air conditioning?

Centregirl, in case you're checking in from time to time, do you happen to have any knowledge of the 3-2 engineering program, and whether students have been satisfied with it?

Iderochi and Firefly,
I can hear the conversation....Parent: "But you have to look at Centre again! That's where my friends' children are going! Don't you want me to have any fun?"
[/quote]

Well, I didn't exactly put it THAT way, but I have convinced S to at least take a look at Centre with (hopefully) an open mind.

Turns out that one of his objections was -- he was thinking of the wrong darn school! Son: "But the whole robes and tie thing seems so goofy" Dad: Huh? Son: "Those robes they wear. Remember the video?" Dad: "Aaaargh!!! That's Sewanee!" Son: "Oh. What was my reason for not liking Centre again?"

When it gets to the point where I have to prompt him on what his argument was to me in the first place, life has gotten too weird. So we'll be making a trip over in the Spring.

Iderochi,
You're right. All this does get very weird after awhile. Is your son a junior this year?

Yes, he's a Junior -- so these things are in flux. Had an initial long list in Sophomore year that has seen massive blood-letting since then. But now we're down to what appears to be a reasonable list of schools to go visit. Based on everthing he's told me about what he's looking for in a school: small size, non-urban, non-preppy (but Greek is okay so long as it doesn't take over the campus), etc. Centre seems like it would be a very good fit. Based on his grades and current test scores (an ACT last year as a trial run), Centre would probably be a solid Target school. The only objection he's had is the location. He wants to go to school in "The South". Now to most everybody else in the world, Kentucky would qualify, but what he really means is VA-NC-SC -- where we have a lot of relatives, and he's very familiar with the area. But on occasion I do get to pull the ace card of "So long as I'm writing the tuition checks, I get to throw my weight around sometimes." So he WILL visit Centre and he WILL at least look at the Rhodes material. LOL.

Sorry guys! I just completely forgot about the threads once school started. I just finished with midterms as of last week, and things haven't even started to slow down.

So to answer some questions I saw:

As far as overnight visiting goes, there really isn't a huge process to matching I don't think. If you're there for a sport, you will be placed with a student in that sport. If you're just doing a general visit, you'll be placed with a student who is available and expresses an interest in hosting a PS. (PS=Prospective Student)
I'm acutally hosting someone tomorrow night and doing a Group Host Lunch on Friday. These things are a GREAT way to get to know the school and the students. Because of my overnight visit, I signed onto the school before I even left. If any of you would be interested in making an overnight visit, you can always request me: Jessie Ferron. I can only host females, obviously, but there are many good males hosts as well.

Yes, all of the dorms have air-conditioning. Some work better than others, and it can be annoying at times bc the school controls whether heat or air is available, but for the most part you learn to deal. We'll either walk around in shorts if it's too hot, or put on a sweatshirt. The dorm I'm currently in (McReynolds) has a really nice air system.

Sorry iderochi, but I'm definitely the wrong person to ask about the 3-2 engineering program. I know absolutely nothing about it!! sorry :-)

Centregirl if you had a nickel for every question you have answered... you would go to graduate school for free... anyways I have a question...or concern...I am a senior at a private school in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. I am currently applying to Brown, Centre, Transy, American, Vandi and UK. I am very excited about applying to Centre, and I have heard so many great things. But person after person, after hearing where I want to go, say that Centre is full of stuck up people. Have you found this to be true in any way?... thank you

Haha.. I so should definitely start charging!
Only I wouldn't do that bc I love promoting the school so much. It's such an amazing place to be; I wouldn't choose to be anywhere else. Now, being honest, the list of school's you've got racked up are quite impressive. It's going to be unlikely to go to anyone of those schools without running into your fair share of 'stuck up' people, Centre included. All of these schools cost a considerable amount of money to go to, so you will find those students who come from a high income household. Now I'm not saying all students who have 'money' are stuck up. My experience has been that even though every campus has these type of students, there are more students that are great people and don't care what your background is. I know students at almost all of the schools you mentioned, and to be frank, Centre has an amazing balance of incomes and backgrounds, thus creating an environment that's very comforting and flexible. I'd have to wonder if these people you've talked to actually have been to the campus and interacted with people or are simply looking in from the outside...

And just for the sake of saving face, I go to Centre and do not by any means consider myself stuck up!

Sorry for the slight hijack -- For those of you who have visited Centre, did you attend one of the Open Houses, or set up a weekday visit? If you did both, which was more helpful? centregirl, did you visit more than once?

Just trying to pencil in next Spring's plans. Thanks!

i visited once in january of my junior year and again in the spring of my senior year. i'd advise going through the admissions office and setting up a daily visit so you get a campus tour, a host lunch, and a class. You are free to come any day of the week (sunday-thursday). they don't usually schedule overnight visits on friday and saturday nights unless you're ona recruiting trip for a sports team. If you know someone at the school already you can always simply and go stay with them on a friday or saturday if you want to.
