Hey I'm currently a freshman at Cornell studying engineering, and having experienced the life pretty much I can give you guys some idea of what to expect.

Some guy did this when I was applying for college and I found it useful so I'm gunna do it here. So just ask a question and I'll try to answer them as best as I can.

umm...oh yah...of course for all u stat whores out there:

SAT: 790 Math 720 Verbal
4-5s on APs
700+ all SATII (Do well on the math ones if u wanna go engineering)
decent reqs
decent carriculars

kk, so ask away, i'll try to check back daily

you asked for it.. my appoligies in advance. here's my list:

hows your night life during weekdays? during weekends?

what activities do you do for fun? doing sports? clubs?

i'm assuming you eat by meal plan, how is it?

how often do you go out to eat?

which dorm are you in and why?

you pledging frat? why/why not?

how did first semester go, and what classes would you recommend to take or not to take?

any tips for those mandatory classes?

how many courses were you excused from because you took the AP course in HS?

desktop or laptop? pc or mac?

tens good for now. thanks a bunch, i know i'm overloading you :P

ill be a freshmen engineering too in fall 05. i cant wait.
what major you going for?
also, what courses did u take last semester, and this semester? like if u could post the timetable that be awesome, like, im interested in the times, days, of classes/lectures etc. oh and teachers would be good, especially if u give a brief description of how they are, and ur opinions. oh also, id relaly like if u could say for each class, if u like/dislike, and why, and what IS the class, what do u learn, is it a class that most take? im in EP by the way.
yeah, is it a long walk to eng quad from north campus?
i heard math 191 = no calculators? how is that possible? is the problems that easy? or do they make u memorize things like 4^3 etc. ??
are u having fun?
u think it will be easy to switch to a physics major? like, would i have to stay an extra semester, or year, or neither, its that easy?

and ill prlly be asking u more questions if thats ok as time goes by, like laptops issues and stuff, but thanks

one last thing, what advice do u have for me to do between now and august? think i should keep up math/physics in the sujmmer? prepare for com100? i know NO programming if that helps. anything u wish u had done before arrival? thanks alot, im eager to hear ur responses. hop[e its not much of a bother

" heard math 191 = no calculators? how is that possible? is the problems that easy? or do they make u memorize things like 4^3 etc. ??"

Never took 191, so really can't say it's easy. However, you should know things like 4^3 without a calculator if you want to be an engineer. In general, you don't get to use calculator on your prelims. Some questions would require lots of calculation, but most of the time the answers came out to be a whole number

polter93157:
1. hows your night life during weekdays? during weekends?
weekdays you study quite a bit, thursday friday and saturday there's always parties at the frats, and sundays you study again. Of course you can always chill with friends and do whatever, the people you meet will determine your college experience, not the activities around campus and I believe that is true for any college.

what activities do you do for fun? doing sports? clubs?
I'm in the breakdancing club, it's a lotta fun but i kinda suck cuz the guys there are damn good. There's also a lot of ethnic clubs and religious clubs and basically whatever you're looking for. And intermural sports are fun, especially when you play with your hall.

i'm assuming you eat by meal plan, how is it?
Food is great for the most part, you get tired of it sometimes but I gurantee it'll be better than most colleges. I'm on the 14 meals a week plan.

how often do you go out to eat?
We order in more than go out since most of the restaurants are pretty far away if you don't have a car. They got some good delivery services.

which dorm are you in and why?
I'm in court, it's the best cuz it's pretty new and awesome. But you don't get to choose unless u want balch so don't worry about it.

you pledging frat? why/why not?
Maybe, still havn't decided yet. Greek life is really big here.

how did first semester go, and what classes would you recommend to take or not to take?
I had a few ups and downs. If you're going engineering, I would suggest taking the first calc class instead of the second one, which is calc 191. I took calc 192 and got stuck with all the smart asses in our school, basically all the international students that really *** up the curve. And everyone in 191 does well, like B+ and above.

any tips for those mandatory classes?
Just pick one that fits your schedual and that seems interesting, especially the writing seminars. And wake up early for add/drop.

how many courses were you excused from because you took the AP course in HS?
I got out of 2 even though I had other AP credit. Though I think it might have been smarter not skipping ahead.

desktop or laptop? pc or mac?
I know people who own each of those and it's really a matter of preference. Though I think a laptop does have it's advantages if you're not a gamer.

Hey glad to hear that you're so enthusiastic lol, that's more than I can say when I got in cornell.

Anyways, the schedualing is all done before classes start so you'll have a few days to figure everything out. First semester I took 192, chem 208, FWS, and com 100m. You can check out the teacher ratings on ratemyprofessor.com and once you get your cornell email, you can register at schedulizer.com and check out the courses and times. I'm in ECE currently, though that might change I dunno. Walk to Engineering quad from north is a good 15-20 minutes one way. All math classes and most physics classes are no calculators. Basically, you really learn how to solve things with variables and most of the numbers won't be THAT bad...but yah, it's not easy. Physics major is really hard I think...but if you're up for it, go ahead. They have the highest requirements.

If you havn't taken computer programming before, I would suggest you sign up for the academic workshops, you should be getting notices about those soon. I know a few friends who took those and I think it helps. Good luck, congratz on getting in.

tettyk
I'm in ECE right now, I might switch to CS, still a little undecided. And I'm a guy lol.

There are some girls in Engineering, they're pretty kewl, though I'll be honest and say that many get intemidated when they reach Cornell and transfer to Arts. It's funny how Engineering is the only college that has these male female questions, I dun see what the big deal is for a woman to be an Engineer :P

And the engineering guys are totally cool! I mean c'mon, we're the best of the best :D dunno why any females would wanna switch out =

we are required to take a semester of math at cornell. i am not a mth type of kid, so i am not interested in taking a challenging math class. what is, literally, the easist math course at cornell? cuz i wanna take it. thanks.

Sakrei
Azero is available to anyone who's interested, they give free lessons and facilities to practice, definitely fun.

Megara41
I think the easiest math at cornell is probably equivalent to AP Calc BC
Actually, there might be a statistics course available to arts students i'm not sure. With course selection, the college gives you plenty of time to plan out what you want to take, you meet with advisors and you can talk to other people a week before classes start so don't worry about picking the right course for you.

Like Yosho I'm also a freshman at cornell, but in CALS(Ag). I would have to say that the easiest math course is probably Math 111 which to me was CALC AB, and I dont even think we covered all of the AB material last semester. You should be fine in Math 111 they actually go pretty slow...

no it shouldnt be too hard. switching majors inside ur college is fine, switching colleges takes some paper work i think, but it shouldnt be too big of a problem, just do well while ur in ur major lol.
