@ jg: Yes, you can do it. Technically, all of you who are admitted into L&S are admitted into the College of L&S…not a specific major. The weird thing about Berkeley is this: They evaluate your application based on your major and admit/reject accordingly, however, they admit to L&S and not to a specific major. This allows every transfer coming in to be undeclared until they declare during their first semester.

With a 3.74, which btw is the exact same GPA I transferred with, you can definitely switch to poli sci with prereqs done and a 3.2+ GPA. Poli Sci is impacted, but that’s where the 3.2 cutoff comes into play. As long as you have above that, you meet the criteria to switch into the major.

As for parking, I don’t drive, so I’m not totally sure, but I’ve never met somebody who has had a problem with it. There are a ton of parking garages.

As for academics, I wouldn’t personally know since I’ve never taken courses at UCLA, but I would say that it depends on your major. Premeds at Berkeley do have it harder than at UCLA due to grade deflation. As for other majors, tbh, I’d say they’re probably pretty close. Then again, I know two people who transferred from UCSD and UCSB, and they both claim that Cal is a whole other monster, so maybe the other UC’s are easier. Either way, this is all anecdotal, so I can’t say with certainty.

@ tamsin: I’m not sure if it’s possible. you need to contact the Berkeley Residential Office. Look up the phone #/e-mail online.

Hi Emil, is it easy to get access to medical research at UCB? I assume the only chance is to go to UCSF, which is about 30 minutes’ drive. Is it readily available for UCB students?
I am a premed student.

@ howard: Yeah, you pretty much have to commute to SF for medical research. UCSF is really accessible btw. You just have to take BART and then a shuttle at 16th Street to UCSF. No need for a car. My roommate is premed, so this is what he does.

@ nick: No, it’s just that everyone is initially undeclared. If you’re in L&S and admitted to Cal, you’re technically undeclared. You petition for a certain major during your first semester here. I petitioned to be a psych major halfway through this semester. You’ll get into any major you want, but if you applied to a capped major like psychology or media studies, you need a minimum of a 3.2+.

Tell me about other good places to live near campus. Is Albany a good choice? I’ll be living off-campus with my buddy; don’t want to be in the heart of gang territory or something. Also, whats the grading policy like?

emil, baby, im a girl but thats okay, i’ll replace all the “mans” with “woman” and all the “fraternities” with “sororities” hahahahahaha
but your love for Berkeley is making me **** my pants with excitement about this whole thing.
i love your enthusiasm, and I’m so thankful for your “pro bono” CC work!!

and thats great news about History actually…I would like to think that my reading/writing skills are up to par, but I’ll see when I get there I suppose.

How much time weekly would you say the whole rushing process took?

edit: santacruz!!! I KNEW YOU WOULD GET IN MAN! teehehehehe look at all us sexy hot Golden Bears

Hi Emil, I intend to take a summer course at UCB. Is it hard to get a class in the summer? Should I take my car with me to UCB (I’m living in SoCal)?

I’m not going to ask a question so I won’t add to your typing…haha. I’m not sure if you remember me since I was lurker and didn’t sign up until summer, but I simply wanted to stop by and thank you for making this thread! It’s awesome that students who transferred are coming back to CC to help out the new transfers! I just wish Yunie would come back but I hear she’s super busy up there in Berkeley! I’m glad you’re doing well too!

Emil, did you have to send them your HS transcripts? My conditions of admission is saying I need to, but this is the first time I’ve ever heard of this…thought I was only supposed to send in my CC transcripts, plus I completed my foreign language at CC.

How does Spring Admit Financial Aid work if you don’t finish in Spring-Fall-Spring? Ex. Spring-Fall-Spring-Fall or Spring-Fall-Spring-Fall-Spring… is two years of Blue and Gold four semester or two years of enrollment… with Spring counting as a whole year… I’m a 0 EFC student, so yeah…

@Emil: Thanks for helping all of us out! Is it really true that you only need the pre-reqs and a 3.2+ to declare a capped major? No extra application, or anything? I would like to add Media Studies as a double major.

How much do you pay for Wada per month? I’m thinking about rooming with a couple of friends off campus, but if that falls through, Wada is a definite second option for me. Also, would we apply to the building itself when we apply for housing or would it be randomly assigned to us?

I’m pretty sure they request everyone’s HS transcript. Other than for a foreign language, you can satisfy the American Institutions requirement in HS.

Awesome. I am so ****ing excited to go to Berkeley and be a Golden Bear!

I was combing craigslist for apartments, and have some friends in Oakland I could live with, but I really want the on-campus experience for my first year. I also plan to come back to San Diego for the summer. I’m really glad you mentioned the Wada apartments because now I feel much better about living on campus, and not in a triple dorm room with 18 year olds. haha

Which leads me to my questions. I am an older student. I have my own apartment in San Diego so I am used to having my own “space.” Are there older students in Wada? Any students over 25? Any around or over 30?

Also, do you know anything about the Channing-Bowditch apartments? I might want to do that too, and just not come back to SD for the summer since they have 12 month leases.

Does your financial aid cover more because you live on campus? I get the blue and gold so I pay no tuition, but it looks like I am going into debt for living expenses. I’d rather live on campus for the first year and get the experience rather than commute from Oakland (which I will probably do senior year)

Thanks man, and can’t wait to see all my fellow Bears in August!
