@pixeljig: The EECS Department (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science) department is very strong at Case the department has everything from the Virtual Worlds Lab to one of the fastest computer networks in the world (Gigabit Fiber optics to every room). There professors are also excellent. The Systems Engineering Major falls under this department and it has a Prof. Erm. that helped to establish the field.

spence113: I have never heard of any school that explicitly offers an undergrad pre-law major (I mean, what if you decided you actually didn’t want to go into law?). Sorry can’t be much help otherwise.
Internships…all kinds, I don’t have many friends going to law school, but I know people who interned at non-profits, engineering firms…

I was wondering about CASE nursing? Can someone tell me more about it.

I can tell you that my wife is a Nurse and was extremely impressed with the CWRU Nursing program. High praise coming from a Pitt BSN / MSN grad. CWRU Nursing is my daughter’s number one choice for 2010 and she / we have looked at quite a few programs.

From what I know, it’s a pretty prestigious program. You start clinicals in your freshman year, so you get plenty of experience. All the nursing students I know work hard, but it’ll pay off in the end.

please take your time answering this-- school’s in session and it’s a long list!

what do you think the overall vibe is for the campus (as in, looking around you, do you feel welcomed, bleak, excitable, oppressed, etc.)?

can you describe the “typical Case student”, if there is one?

how do the local businesses and restaurants treat Case students (not “do they give them discounts” but as in “are they happy to see case people or are they dreading their arrival”)?

what do you like the best about Case?

what would you change about Case if you had the power to?

what was the deciding factor that made you choose Case over the other schools you were considering?

how was it living in the freshman dorms (how did you like your roommate, what was your relationship with your advisor, were you able to live somewhat comfortably, how big are the rooms)?

sorry the list is so long!

some background about me: i live in maryland and case is one of the schools i most want to go to. im a girl and i want to major in Psychology or Sociology.

thank you!

How is the psychology/sociology program at Case? (I’m interested in social work)

It’s time to take your act on the road.

aglages, who are you referring to, I haven’t read this whole thing, but I feel like I’m missing something, I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong???

To answer some of these questions (sorry many of them I’m not really sure what you meant, feel free to rephrase, but for now…)

“what do you think the overall vibe is for the campus (as in, looking around you, do you feel welcomed, bleak, excitable, oppressed, etc.)?”
I don’t really think about this much…it tends to get bleak around stressful times of the semester:P but depending on who you hang out with, pretty much anything. Even when I first got here, I found friends relatively easily right outside my door and down the hall and all that.

“can you describe the “typical Case student”, if there is one?”
We tend to be more studious than at many schools, but there’s a range, and then people still get involved in different things, Greek life has a large presence, extracurriculars…

“how do the local businesses and restaurants treat Case students (not “do they give them discounts” but as in “are they happy to see case people or are they dreading their arrival”)?”
I’ve never had a problem, students are in Little Italy and Coventry a fair amount and people seem fine with that, it’s not like they dote on us or anything, but they’re nice to us.

“what do you like the best about Case?”
The people (cliche, I know), I’ve met so many amazing students to look up to, to support me/be supported by me, as well as solid professors who would do almost anything for me.
“what would you change about Case if you had the power to?”
Administration, I am not a fan of the undergraduate studies (dealing with study abroad was a nightmare) or programs like SAGES, I’d also like a few more GREAT teachers (I’ve had a few that were just inspiring, but I’d like more)
“what was the deciding factor that made you choose Case over the other schools you were considering?”
Location, proximity of med school/hospital and the BME program, scholarship (not in any order)

“how was it living in the freshman dorms (how did you like your roommate, what was your relationship with your advisor, were you able to live somewhat comfortably, how big are the rooms)?”
OK, by advisor, I assume you mean RA. He was good, we didn’t talk much, my floor got along really well and was a pretty “good” floor so our RA didn’t have much (if anything) to do disciplinary-wise. My freshman hall was very close, we went to dinner together everynight, most of us still live together (well, not me, but that’s for other reasons).

“how does the school staff treat Case students (not the professors, but the administrators, campus police, janitors, etc.)?”
Like I said, not a fan of undergrad studies (nice, but not very helpful) the staff in general are very nice (I love the librarians, the traffic cop who polices the intersections is a sweetheart)
if you know, how do your professors feel about working at Case?
The ones I work with seem to really like it, the one I work for has been here his whole career
is there a whole lot of “useless bureaucracy” at Case?
I don’t know about useless, some incompetency, yes. But just want to say I am a huge fan of our president, Barbara Snyder, just what she’s done with pulling us out of debt in a not-so-hot economic climate wins my vote.
is the learning atmosphere more competitive or supportive?
it can get kind of competitive (e.g. w some pre-meds), but just avoid those people and you’ll be fine, and profs are really supportive
do you consider your courseload difficult?
Yes, but doable
in your opinion, is Case a “grind school”?
Well, I can be kind of a “grind” person, I think I would be no matter where i went
sorry the list is so long!

By the way (and this is not a rhetorical question), what is your impression of Case that makes you want to come here (I don’t mean that in any negative way, it’s just I’m from the East coast and hadn’t heard too much about Case before I applied so I’m just curious what you’ve heard)?

thank you!

About Electrical Engineering and Computer Science profs, (I hate to say negative things about Case) but for full disclosure’s sake, actually I heard most of the teaching was not so great. I took one class in the EECS department, 3, if you count the Intro to Programming and Circuits that all engineers take and the programming and electrical eng classes had AWFUL teachers. But the circuits class (Frank Merat) had one of my all-time favorite teachers.

Casegirl: Sorry about the misunderstanding, but there was a spam post directly before mine that has since been removed. My post was definitely NOT directed to you.

Just wanted to say thanks guys. I just opened the letter and I got in, and I got a scholarship for 20,000!

Wow rooni2010… $20,000 is great, congtratulations!

This week we encouraged my son to do a last application to Case. CMU had been our “wild card” (unvisited campus), but it sounds like they have little merit aid. Case seems to give a lot.

Many moons ago I was accepted to Case. At the time the main drawback seemed to be city campus, with concerns of safety etc. How is it these days?

Also… if anybody has good leads for Case music fun for a engi-nerd who also loves music (piano, sax/jazz, composing for ensembles, etc)… let me know.

Music: It saddened me when I got to Case and found out that I (as a non-major) would have to pay for music lessons. However, I have known people to declare a music major and conveniently drop the major before graduation for the free lessons. I’m not sure I’d be the best person to ask about fun music stuff because I just haven’t had much time for that, but I think most of it would have to be informal (again, if he’s not going to major in it). That being said, I’m sure he’s not the only one interested in playing around. Not quite what you were asking, but in general (for anyone else interested in more informal music opportunities), there are quite a few A cappella groups, or the choir, or the orchestra (you don’t have to be a maor, or the orchestra for the student musical group, etc.
