I am planning on majoring in Mechanical Engineering and am considering several schools. Rather than write a thread that compares them all, which inevitably leads to many negative comments about one school or another, I am taking a different approach...

Please tell my why I should go to CWRU for Mechanical Engineering. What are the "pros" that make this school the one I should pick over other very good choices?

Disclaimer: I am at case for Biomed Eng, so I don’t know as much about Mech Eng.

I am not quite sure about Mech Eng, but Biomed Eng has a strong focus on industry (and I suspect Mech Eng does too), so many students do co-ops, so if you have an interest in that, it might be helpful. That being said, I have more interest in research than industry and there are plenty of opportunities there as well.

It is a smaller department and in general I have found engineering professors to be pretty open to interacting with students.

Sorry, like I said, this question is sort of beyond the extent of my knowledge.

Hi, Casegirl, you’re actually the type of student I’m looking to talk to.

My son is interested in BME as a career, not as a prelude to med school.

We’re looking at Marquette because of its internships/coops available to students, but would like to have other options as well.

So many BME programs are simply premed and not focused on preparing you for the job market.

Son is also interested in a somewhat urban campus, where he has access to a city, not just stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Being from the south, we’re concerned about how he’ll adapt to the weather at Marquette, and I’m sure Case being in Cleveland is equally horrendous.

Can you comment on any of these things? The BME program, the weather, coops/internships?

Also, son has gone to Catholic school all his life, mostly all male since fifth grade.

Do you think Case will be too liberal or culturally shocking for him?

Also, son wants to meet people from all over and does not want a commuter college. Are most students at Case from Cleveland, or is there a diverse population?
