sospiro, the supplement to submit to your counselor is on page 6 of the PDF file of the MSU undergraduate application.

that's what I thought
since I was completing it online, I was really confused
thanks a lot :)

No problem! When you are completing your app online for MSU there is a tab called "print high school form." That is what you would click on to get the print-out to give to your counselor

How accurate would you say USNEWS worldwide ranking is?
World's Best Colleges and Universities: Top 200 - US News and World Report
I was expecting to see Michigan State University ranked in top 200 world wide, but didn't find the school. Would I be over looking the list?
-Thanks
Also how is the isotope competition going along? I haven't heard any news on it lately.

Never mind I've found an additional list, along with the schools previous spot in 2007.

Being in the James Madison college, i assume you're around some very politically-oriented people, right?
How is the political climate i.e. extremely liberal, or more middle-of-the-road?
I know that all of academia leans left, so what i'm asking is how open-minded are the students, and to what extent do they identify as "democrats" as opposed to independents who happen do strongly dislike the bush administration. Would somebody who is more libertarian than anything else fit in there?

Don't know if I ask this question before, but won't hurt asking again....
Currently a junior in high school and plan to apply to Michigan State University in 2010. Although looking at their recommanded classes, one is geometry which I haven't took nor plan to take.
Math classes I've taken: Algebra 1&2, Advance Algebra 3&4, (Currently ) Pre-Calculus
Math class I plan to take 12th grade: Ap Calculus
Do you think not taking geometry will hurt my chances of admission?
I'm also debating on whether I should take physics or Ap chemistry next year. Not taking physics will hurt my chances of admission? Plan to take pre-med courses in college, will high school physics be a must to have a better understanding, or Ap Chemistry will do better?

To address your first question if you are going to be taking AP calculus your senior year, not taking geometry won't hurt your chances of getting into MSU.

Out of AP Chemistry and Physics, I would recommend taking AP chemistry. Since you are going to be pre med you will end up taking Chem 141 your freshmen year, which is one of the the most failed classes at MSU. Anything you can do to better prepare yourself for that class would be very beneficial. Either course is still going to be useful. I doubt that taking one vs. another would have an impact on your admission status.

Its great you are trying to plan everything out so early, try not to stress about it though. On a side note I got in with a 23 ACT (only took it once, definitely should have re-taken it), 3.7 GPA, and I took 3 AP classes in high school (AP Bio, Econ, and Government). Compared to a lot of people my transcript wasn't that impressive. Just make sure you apply early and keep your grades up. If you have any other questions just let me know..

Thanks, although I'm debating on whether to apply early or not. I heard it can hurt your chances with amount of FASA offered.

Do whatever you can to avoid CEM 141.

Well if I take Ap Chemistry ( currently taking Ap Biology) I don't plan on taking such a test that may prevent me from taking the class in college. I would just like to take these classes educational wise, and help improve/ easy my freshmen year... since I will already be doing a lot of transition and stuff.

mephist0: the political climate is rather liberal, but James madison college and case hall also boasts a very active conservative, republican group. Libertarians would definitely fit in, as there is a fair share of these here. Obviously no matter what political group you affiliate with, there is apt to be lively debate. There are a lot of independents as well.

Coolbrezze: I'd take AP chem (for the reasons msuspartan said).

Thanks. How interesting are the first year James Madison classes? How tough?
Can you test out of the 2-year foreign lang. requirement? i.e. if i test out of Spanish 2, will i still have to take spanish 3 and 4?

As for 1st year workload, it is generally tough. Loads of reading and depending on your writing teacher, lots of essays as well (relatively short though, most are 3-5 page papers). I think my james madison writing class is very interesting because of my professor, even though I did not like the assigned readings. For the intro to public policy james madison class, I like the assigned readings overall but they start out with the boring stuff first (i.e. federalist papers and toqueville). It really depends on the professor though, and the more you talk in class the better.

You can definitely test out of the foreign language requirement. You just need to have 2 years proficiency of any foreign language. For example, I took the spanish placement test (after taking 3 years of spanish in high school) and placed into Spanish 250 (2nd year spanish). After completing spanish 250 I am done with my foreign language requirement

hey i wanna ask, i heard that MSU is a good choice for people who want to major in zoology. you see, my dream job is becoming a zoologist, or perhaps genetics even, well, not really decided...im still in high school. So isit true?

yes, MSU has a GREAT zoology program. i'm a pre-vet/zoology major and the college of natural science here is amazing, and one of the strongest in the country.

The Department of Zoology at Michigan State University

check it out :)

thanks so much!

are you preparing to be a vet next time? also, may i ask if MSU is a good college overall?

yeah, i'm hoping to apply to vet school either next year, or the year after. i haven't quite decided yet :)

MSU is definitely a good college overall...but what specifically are you asking about? the atmosphere, academics, etc?

actually almost everything. the studying environment, the people, the teachers and the overall results...

tt's cool:) i have a friend who wants to be a vet as well haha, but i think im most probably going with zoologist or genetics...

So what's the work (outside class) like here? Especially in the James Madison College (fa-la-la-lena)
As in, is busywork extinct or is it still prevalent? Is the work you mostly about reading up on the subject, writing papers, or what?
