Hi guys!
I’m so excited that it’s almost time to welcome the class of 2020 & I know right before decision day is confusing, so I figured I’d open up a forum to answer any questions that y’all might have about Tulane!
MODERATOR’S NOTE: Anyone is free to ask or answer questions in this thread.
My daughter is starting in the fall. Do you recommend any particular type of computer? Should we get her a printer too? Thinking of getting her a macbook air. Seems like when we were in the LBC and library we mostly saw students using macs. We know all the rooms have a frig and microwave. Is there anything else you recommend bringing down? Thanks
@X22011 I personally, being a junior in high school, would rather have a MacBook Pro than MacBook Air. They are just sturdier, easier to use, and just like 100x better and worth the extra $.
Agree that sturdiness issue worth it, and there is no longer any reason to do PC instead of Mac except cost. But most seem to go with Mac I think.
No reason for printer. They get an allowance per semester to print on campus which is sufficient for most. If she finds otherwise, it is easy to get to several stores that have printers and she could buy one, they are so cheap now.
I didn’t realize the MacBook Pro had switched to the flash drive. I have a really old MacBook Pro that is heavy and a newer MacBook Air that I like a lot better because it is lighter and faster. Looks like we will get her the MacBook Pro since they have improved. Thanks
That’s so funny, @X22011 . My Mac Pro just died after 5 years of yeoman service (I am on my iPad) and I arranged to replace it with the equivalent model today. So I also just found out about the flash drive, and the standard RAM is 4x bigger as well. Should be faster by some amount I would think.
I don’t like how apple is stingy on disk space even on the MacBook pros. I bumped it up to 512 but that is still not really enough if you do video. Had to stop spending $$ though because that was already $2800 (15").
I do have to agree that by today’s standards 512 is on the small side for the price. Twice that is standard for PCs now from what I am told. For me it is tons, but I can definitely see how some hobbies and professions could eat that up. I assume they attach an outside drive, but that doesn’t change the point. Still, the vast majority of students don’t seem to have any issue with it.
Hi @X22011! I personally do not have a printer, and one of my majors is English. The printing money tends to be plenty, most people don’t use even close to that much. Sometimes it’s sort of a pain to wake up to print without class but I’d definitely recommend not getting one before school starts, and then getting one later if she feels she needs it!
Also @X22011, I personally love my mac but there definitely isn’t a specific type of laptop needed. Whatever your daughter likes the best and is comfortable with should be fine!
And of course, there are a ton of things that make life easier/ more comfortable here so I’ll list a few off the top of my head! I’d say definitely a mini vacuum (life saver), power strips/ extension chords because there are not enough outlets ever. Always extra chargers and an external battery or two in case of power outages. Plenty of rain gear because it floods like crazy here & people who aren’t from around here always underestimate that. A decent mattress topper for sure. A brita filter.
Regarding the rain and flooding. One tip we received that has been a lifesaver is to carry an extra t-shirt in a zip lock bag in your backpack at all times. If you get caught in the rain and get soaked then have to sit in class when the a/c is blasting you’ll freeze.
This may sound biased and awful, but I was always under the impression that Tulane attracts a lot of alpha girls with big personalities and that a quieter girl could get lost in the shuffle. Any truth to that stereotype? I have a daughter who wants a vibrant campus, a greek life etc, but I wonder if she would fit in if she takes her time to really warm up.
Hii! Dining halls are dining halls honestly- it’s not great, it’s never going to be but it’s fine. This year I feel like there were steps made to accommodate vegetarian/ gluten free students (not well, mind you, but steps) which is cool. I am not an RLC honestly don’t even know what that is! And t-shirts, a ton. Actually a running joke with my friends that that’s where our tuition goes. Thanks for your questions!
I think the cool thing about Tulane is that there are so many different types of people. People come from all over and everyone’s different. There are so many different groups and I feel like everyone who wants to find one does. If your daughter is fun loving and sweet, trust me, she’ll find her place! I can be pretty shy at first too, but the thing about going to college is everyone’s in the same boat- kind of confused and nervous and excited and wanting to fit in. I think Tulane is the best choice Ive ever made and hopefully your daughter will/ would love it as well!
Hmm, I don’t think so! I don’t see why there would be- you’re probably better off getting it at home & having it all set up before going to school. that’s what I did !
