My apologies, as I assume this must have been asked, but I cannot find it. My son is attending in the Fall and will major in business. Is Tulane indifferent with regard to whether your laptop is an Apple or Dell. If not, do you know if there are discounts which can be obtained as a student, for either the hardware or software?
Thanks very much.

I was referred to the head of technology for the business school with that question and he said definitively that he recommended Dell for Business school students. He did acknowledge that a Mac with Windows capability could be used, but with a 2-3 year protection plan purchase for a Dell, on-site service was available. We are Mac people, but we went with the Dell.

Here is the link from his email to the Freeman website re: computers.

kreativekat: thank you very much. We have always been a Dell family, but candidly, I have seen their quality and service erode so greatly over the past 5 years (even with extended warranties). I was looking forward to my son purchasing a Mac. My daughter has a Dell Studio (two years old) and just had a nasty virus attack the system. When you call Dell, even with an extended warranty, they still want to charge for the “consultation.” In any event, my sincere thanks for the prompt and informative response!

I use a macbook pro with windows running on the side simultaneously (parallels 6), so I suppose it works just as well. As speaking of customer service, I promise nobody will beat Apple. It’s unreal! They help u right there, and fix the problem no matter what it takes. I had a sound problem before, and Apple used overnight shipping sent me a giant box to put the laptop in and sent it back to me via overnight shipping the next day. They changed the whole logic board cuz on the one little sound problem. I was shocked…

Hi Tyler,
My D will be a freshman also majoring in business and we have been having the exact same discussion. She will buying a new computer next month because her Dell is crap. We bought two of the same computers 4 years ago - one for her and one for me, and have had nothing but problems ( power cord not fitting correctly, keys breaking off, etc, not to mention the horrendous customer support.) I even made the mistake of buying another Dell 6 months ago and it is out being repaired now due to a problem with the display being distorted and jumping like an old fashion TV and the Web cam not staying on). It is under warranty but now I am without my computer for at least two weeks while it is sent out to be repaired. So my D will be buying a Mac and we will just add whatever is needed to use in the business school. We are so done with Dell!

My D and I were at honors weekend last month and asked the question of serveral people and she should be fine with the Mac. I was even told that the business school will be moving in that direction in the future too.

Mumof2: Thanks very much. It is amazing how many Dell computers I have owned over the last 15 years and if I have a choice, I will never buy another one again. Based on your input, I will purchase the Mac for my son. I am glad the Business school will be moving in that direction. I was just concerned about support, as I have no experience with Macs and would not be able to assist my son if he has an issue.
