yea you would definitely meet great people. its just not “wild” as other dorms

Just about the same. Science majors who want to finish in 4 years normally take 4 classes every quarter of every year (and take 3 classes maybe a few quarters here and there) I’m staying a 5th year because of the difficulty and high number of classes i have to take as a chem major physics minor. 5th year seniors are very common, esp for science majors.

Do Work-Study require an interview to get a job? and
is Work-Study pretty competitive?

thenomad415:
I have a friend who is in work-study and she had interview for a potential job. I’m not in work-study myself, but I’m guessing it’s competitive because you have to apply and be interviewed.

RE: the overnight portion of the Bear Facts Oreintation!!!

So Day 1 of the bfo is from 9am-7:30pm. But what is the time schedule for Day 2??? I need confirmation on the time so I can determine if my sister needs to stay overnight for 1 or 2 days.

I would like some recommendations for teachers to look for and to watch out for when im signing up for classes at orientation. My major is EE if that helps.

i was wondering… is math 004 low then? for an incoming freshman? or could you actually go higher? is there a lower class? i’m majoring in pre-business. would you recommend taking summer classes to go higher? thank you!

It’s too late to sign up for summer school; unless you bomb the arwp

I asked about math 4 and…

b0baboi said this. :p

"Math 4 is for Pre-Business majors, which leads into Math 22 ( Calculus for Business)
Math 5 is for other majors, which leads to Math 9A(Single variable Calculus)

Math 4 is College Mathematics for Business and the Social Sciences ( Algebra2 i think?).
Math 5 is Pre-Calculus. Its basically Math 4 + Trig."

So, I’m assuming math 4 is fine… . I got placed into math 5. I’m going to ask to take math 4 instead. o_o

tehlunatic:
RateMyProfessors is usually where I look if none of my friends has had the professor before. If you look up a specific class and professor on the Schedule of Classes for Fall 2009, maybe I can weigh in if I’ve had that professor.

karmy:
Math004 is the lowest level math, but a lot of freshmen get placed into it. My friend is a Pre-Business major as well and she got placed into Math004. I believe it’s too late to sign up for summer classes at UCR, but you could always check at a CC. Don’t worry about going to higher level classes – you have time. Also, you get credit for only EITHER Math 4, 5, or 8.

shesasensation,

When will we know which professor is teaching a course? (i.e. Math 022).

How many freshmen take the English remedial course? i failed mine, and i was wondering whether i should take summer courses or take the remedial course in the fall

Hey all, great thread.

I’m an incoming graduate student (PhD), and had questions about UCR housing.

I applied for on campus housing but I’m on the waitlist. In the meantime, where are the best places to live, apartments and areas? I’m looking for somewhere safe and quiet, and walking or biking distance to campus. Garaged parking is a plus.

Also, what are the best places to rent houses? ie. in relation to campus, what part of town is the safest/nicest place to live (north, west, south, east of campus)?

Thanks.

sky-raptor:
In most cases, the professors should be listed. Usual exceptions are:

Huge classes like Spanish or English usually have smaller lecture sections (no separate discussion) taught by TAs. For example: If you look up ENGL001 classes, all the sections will list the professor as “Axelrod R, In Charge*.” That means it’s taught by the TA “in charge” of that section, not actually Professor Axelrod. The schedule of classes will usually list TAs (across most classes) for sections by the first week of school, if not earlier.

Some odd classes will list the professor as “The Staff.” In most cases, it be taught by a professor. They just haven’t determined which one yet.

You can always go to the first section of class and see who your TA/Professor is. Then you can add/drop classes the first two (?) weeks of the quarter. I’d be careful with doing this though.

StrawberiCoke:
More freshmen take it than you think. You won’t be alone, don’t worry. I’m not sure if UCR will allow you to take the prerequisites to required English classes at a CC. I would call/e-mail and ask. I say take it in the Fall just to be safe (just in case they don’t count it), and to be better prepared for the next English you’ll take.

hi I’m going to be a freshman at UCR this fall. The move-in date is Sept. 20th, I was wondering do the students stay in the dorms until the quarter begins? The fall quarter starts on Sept. 24th right? I’m going to be in the East Lothian resident hall too. What do you think of the dorms? Nice & outgoing ppl there? =P
Thank you!

arcadefire1027: I will be a freshman in the fall of 2009. I am entering as a theatre/drama major. I have priority registration because of my honors qualification. here are my questions: how should I go about picking my classes? which classes are popular that pertain to dramatic arts? do you have any advice about drama majors?

thanks for your help

Are there any particularly popular/active sororities at UCR? Any comments would be helpful. I’m trying to figure out if I want to rush. o_o

jenuwin01:
I would say the more popular sororities are Gamma Phi Beta, Alpha Chi Omega and Sigma Kappa and Delta Gamma. I can’t tell you anything about them since I’m not involved in Greek life at UCR. These are just the ones that I can think of off the top of my head because I always see girls with these sorority letters on their clothes/bags.

More info:
[Student Organizations](http://studentlife.ucr.edu/studentOrganizations/Pages/studentOrganizations.aspx)

There are also honor/honorary societies that use Greek letters, ex. Psi Chi is the Psychology Honor Society.

I advise you to be aware of what you’re getting into; organizations can take up a lot of your time and it’s easy to prioritize those responsibilities over school (although lots of these groups are good by having a minimum GPA requirement and required study hours/groups). Education is what you’re at UCR for first. I don’t mean to sound all parent-y, but I’ve just seen too many smart people end up failing classes because they’re too involved with other things.

I posted these questions in another topic but also wanted more info from other people as well.

I plan to major in Bio, but i’m enrolled in CHASS. I need to change over to CNAS. Help on that topic?

Another question: I accidentally enrolled into orientation for only CHASS. Can i still enroll in CNAS classes during the orientation? And what will i miss from the CNAS orientation?
AndrewLim is online now

I have a question:
Do you think that I should buy the Freshman Record? or Do we have to?
I really don’t know if I should get one, it’s kind of like a yearbook but not really. Don’t wanna spend money on things that are not necessary right now.
