Ask a current UCR freshman anything!

Thanks Whiteclock! That website is just what I needed!

lol yeah, it helped me a lot too

:P

so what’s your major? Gosh…I don’t know if I want to be a biology major. It’s too hard and I’m not a science person. Now I don’t know what I want to major in really. grr

Chemistry

I like physics more but my parents like bio more… so I took the middle ground lol

Minor in physics dude! the physics series has so many cool classes! plus as a chem major, you take physics40 a,b,c,d anyway! but take e too just for fun! (biosci take phys2 a,b, which is weaksauce physics, and others sci majors that have to take phys40 only take a and b)

Iis minoring supposed to be a declared thing? Or do you just take the classes?

Not exactly sure how I’m supposed to go about this

yeah…, how exactly does minoring work? I didnt sign up for it earlier, but can i sign up for a minor during class registrations in orientation?

Back to the minoring question, how does it work? Do you get some sort of degree when completing it?

you declare later on, but start taking the classes first. the minor is not printed on your diploma, but is printed on your transcript.
overall, when you tell ppl youre a chem major n physics minor, you get a lot of weird faces and “wth is wrong with you” hahahha!

lol is it supposed to be hard or something

I had a pretty rough experience with Physics AP back in high school, although it was sorta fun too :/

chem was fun
bio was boringish but not as hard

i dunno abt hard, i love the subjects! and rit there with ya on bio… not that interested.
ok yeah physics40 does get hard and all, but nothing you cant handle.
but no joke, tell a chass student n they will freak out on you hahhaha.

Is Biology @ UCR same as AP Biology? I had a C- in AP Biology. I hated the fact that I needed to remember all the diagrams and info. because I’m not so good at remembering stuff. I don’t know cuz Biology just doesn’t interest me. Plus, I don’t want to take Chem or Physics cuz it involves math and I’m so anti-math. haha
However, I love doing science labs cuz they’re so fun! All those cool experiments.
but I don’t like writing lab reports haha
What should I do? Should I just stick with Biology and see how things go? Or should I change my major now?

Yeah, I was wondering about that too -

since you can’t skip general chemistry, is the same with biology?

not sure

honestly, it does not sound like you’ll make it as a science major (gpa wise)… bio at the college level is pretty intense, and when you get into the upper devision science classes, there is a lot of work to be done. most all science majors have to take chem001, bio05, phys40/phys02, and math09(calculus) for their lower divs. btw, our science labs are 3hours (ochem is 4 hours).
MY best recomendition for you is to come in as a CHASS undeclared, or if you want a CNAS undeclared till you find something you like, but CNAS really does not seem fit for you.

chass = humanities college
cnas = science college
bcoe = is the engineering college, lots of math and programing and stuff lol

Yeah I agreed. That’s why I was thinking to change my major now on the myUCR page. If I choose to be an undeclared major, what are the core classes I will be taking? I mean I haven’t declared a major yet. I don’t think I would want to be CHASS undeclared cuz I am anti-history person too. hahaha

even with a 5 on the AP i believe you only get to skip one quarter of biol05, maybe, most likely not!

Heres how it works, chem001w < chem001a < chem001b, biol05a < chem001c, biol05b, etc…

chem001w is for students who are not good at chemistry… if you took the AP class or did really good on the SAT2 chem exam, then you skip it and go on to chem001a. the three quarter first year works perfectly with the a,b, and c parts of the class. as for bio, they dont joke around! you have to have passed chem001a before you can take biol05a. most first years take biol05a during the winter quarter with lab. a good number of them fail and end up retaking the class section during the spring while everyone else is taking biol05b.

anti history? hahah. me too kind of but too bad… everyone has to take history at some point! even a sci major. Go into CHASS, its not all history. there is media, arts, dance, phyc, business, history =P, and lots of other majors there. it is the largest college on our campus with the most majors and students!

basic classes to start with for an undeclared, engl001a, a breath course, and a math class. (math08 or something not too heavy like that)

the breath course can be anything really if youre undeclared, because they are defined as courses outside of your major. take a fine art class or something along those lines.

I think it’s cool that I can skip some of the humanity stuff with my AP credit though :D

no more gov and econ :D

Yeah, but I’m more anti math than history. haha
I was thinking to take Psychology as a breadth course. If I find that really interesting, I can change my major to that. Gosh but I don’t want to go as an undeclared major…I want to major in something I really like. The problem is I don’t know what I am really interested in. I do like english but it’s not my favorite subject. What are you suggestions for me to do to find a major I like?

haha nice!
im knocking out my econ requirement by taking macro this summer session. seriously, summer is the only time i have to get them out of the way, rest of the year its all science classes…

just come as chass undeclared… its the biggest major for incoming freshmen, no joke hahahha! relax k? no one knows for sure what they want to do, ya get me? you have two years before the university requires you to declare a major. in that time, take classes here and there and slowly build up to a major. Phyc is an excellent choice and a cool major too, plus the phyc department just got an awesome new building last year! haha

im outs for the nice, peace!
