Nope. I never figured out if Linux was appropriate for me, seeing that the GUI is mostly geared for people who want to operate servers

I have always wanted to use Linux but have never tried it. I heard you can dual use Linux with windows.

I was wondering…when are the jobs at UCR available to apply for the fall?

Question about textbooks … do we wait until the first day of class to know what texts are required or are they posted somewhere online?

Twilight girl: I read in a fin aid paper you have to report to the career center or something like that for work study

sky-raptor: It say in the syllabus what books to get and such. You get it the first day of class

How much time do professors allot for us to get our books?

Or at least, start using them in class

twilight_girl09:
I think you should go to the financial aid office if you haven’t already started filling out the work-study forms or if you don’t know if you’re eligible. If you know you’re already doing work-study for sure, then you can look up jobs on SCOTJobs ([Career Center - Job & Internship Listings](http://careers.ucr.edu/Students/jobs.htm) ; click on the SCOTJobs link). No summer jobs are posted, but they’ll start listing when fall quarter will be approaching soon.

sky-raptor:
You can check online what books are required for class through the bookstore. However, I don’t recommend this as they will sometimes list incorrect books or professors will make last minute changes. Before classes start, some professors will post a syllabus that tells you which books to get. But I say go to the first class, see what the professor says and then go buy your books.

Whiteclock:
In some/most cases you start using books immediately. Some professors may be nice enough to scan the first few readings because they know students are still trying to get books. They will (or should) be pretty understanding about it. Just try to have them by the end of Week 0/1.

so how long is the average it takes for books to come from amazon?

“Before classes start, some professors will post a syllabus that tells you which books to get”

Where would we find this syllabus? O_o

jenuwin01:
Thanks for pointing that out! I’m sorry, I should have made that clearer. I was talking about iLearn ([Blackboard Academic Suite](<a href=“Canvas is UCR’s New Learning Management System | Information Technology Solutions”>Canvas is UCR’s New Learning Management System | Information Technology Solutions)). It shows the classes in which you are enrolled during the school year. Some professors rely on it heavily, some don’t use it at all. Or, professors might just send the class an e-mail with the syllabus attached.

haha thank you for the information. ;p It says I’m not enrolled in anymore courses. D: !

Anyway, I was going through the course catalog… I only saw Hist15 that had a link… but after looking at the syllabus and notes, I realized I don’t want to take that. I think it will come in handle when determining what to take next quarter. But then… I went through most of the other subjects and couldn’t click on anything. D:

Is it necessary to buy a UCR class catalog for orientation or can we just look up classes online??

no. don’t buy the class catalog.

use <a href=“Select a Term”>Select a Term; to look up classes

they also loan you a bootleg one :p

yep they said its not even up to date

I’m an incoming freshmen and was wondering if they are any summer opportunities at UCR other than the Summer Session or the Summer Bridge program for incoming freshmen. I’m a Biological Sciences Major but I’m not sure I will stick to my major so summer opportunities in an field for incoming freshmen would be okay.

Well, the Honors program had a summer session…

Summer bridge is a sort of… catch-up thing for people who haven’t met prerequisites for certain classes

I don’t think they really offer any enrichment stuff, especially since it’s kinda late in the summer

if you go on the schedule of classes you may notice a sign saying “Enrollment for summer session 2009 is now closed”

I checked some of the classes and they’re were many that didn’t offer any units. what does this mean? why don’t these classes offer units?

Also, where can I find the General Education requirements if I am a Biology major? Give me the link/website please.

Some classes are supplementals for other classes, such as a discussion for a lecture class

they would not give any credit, since the credit is already given through the lecture class

[UCR College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences](http://www.cnasstudent.ucr.edu/students/declared.html)

there are links on this website to core courses and requirements for a bachelor’s
