Ask a Current UCSB Student Anything!

S2 applied undeclared to Letters and Science, but lately he has been saying he's thinking he should have applied to engineering. My question is, do you know students who have transferred into the engineering (probably Chem E) college from another college (L&S) at SB. Do you have to wait two years or could you apply to transfer during your freshman year?

How is the honors program? And also, how is the biology department? I am majoring in biology and I would also like to take some classes in marine biology.
Irvine is having an honors experience day for potential students to visit the campus... does SB have something like this? (I got the Chancellor's reception, but I would like to see the actual campus.)

konakai27:The Honors Program is really beneficial at UCSB. I'm in it right now and along with automatically being entered for scholarships and merit awards, I get priority on signing up for classes. You'll soon realize that signing up for classes in college is a complete hassle. By being in the Honor's program at UCSB, I can get into upper division courses before some Junior standing students. The bio program is great, and obviously marine bio concentration is even better. The pre-req classes such as Chem and Physics are very difficult and require a lot of diligence/hard-work. The marine bio program has its own building right on the lagoon that provides not only a great work environment but also lets one easily access hands on experiments that pertain to your research. The bio program also offers immense amounts of internships. I was originally a bio major but switched out. I still get at least 20 emails a week offering me great internships and volunteer work. SB definitely has something just like that. I forget what it's called but I was invited to the campus to hear about the school and at the beginning of the ceremony, Chancellor Yang announced that we had all been admitted into the Honors program. I'm sure you'll receive the same invitation...

Jazzymom: The transfer into the engineer program is apparently a very complicated process. One of my friends is attempting to switch into it and he told me that it requires that you complete all of the pre-reqs for the major (in your case, CE) and maintain above a 3.2 GPA. I suggest that if your son really does intend on doing this that he seek more detailed information before signing up for classes in the summer.

Oh and the pre-reqs will span his entire freshmen year so he'd apply at the end of his freshmen year.

Thanks for the info.
I received the Chancellor's invitation, but the reception is not at the school. I believe it is in a hotel in Los Angeles. The Irvine thing is actually at the school and they give tours around the campus, the dorms, and presentations based on major, etc. If SB had that I'd really like to go. Irvine also has this stay over thing where you can shadow a current student and go to class with them and sleep in the dorms. Does SB have that?

Also, are there any scuba or surf classes offered by the school, just for recreation?

I didn't notice that in the envelope I received for the Regents that there was an invitation to UCSB Spring Insight Open House, so nevermind my first question.

How would you compare the Biz Econ majors at UCSB and UCLA?

dont wanna sound offensive since i'm a biz econ major myself, but i've heard that compared to UCLA our biz econ major is a joke.

What is the intro week at SB like? I mean like the first week or so when freshmen come and there are activities and such.

Also, do you feel like IV will get boring at some point? Like the parties will feel monotonous and the same...

GerNerd, thanks a lot for the info, specifically however, do you know of any website or anyone I can talk to on specific directions? Like transfers from a SB local to another city and then to LA but not union station, but to a bus near my home? Ideally, there would be no way for me to pay $36 back and it drops me off in dirty union station not even to my home, and if I go to school 5 times a week that equals 180 dollars imagine over 2 years of doing this? This scares the hell out of me I am pretty sure I'll get accepted soon to the school, but I would only consider poaying $36 if its on a crusing vacation or visiting friends and staying over but not everyday. that eventully would worn me out, I hope there's some solution. I was checking the MTD website of the UCSB bus and I would like to know more info on where does it get off. That would be pretty sad for me that I would have to be going on amtrak everyday, or go to LAX, ( thats more expensive it says $24 only 1 way) I dont know but sure sounds expensive, and time consuming but it is what it is I guess. Oright hope you could help me out and thanks for the oher info once again

I got a couple things,

how are the parties if your under 21, u still get in??

lots of one night stands... or relationships?

Friendly people where you be friends with everyone??

Campus Life??

Is there a sports management program?

thnxs

konakai27: There are both scuba and surf programs offered by the school. The scuba program requires that you take training classes to receive your scuba license which costs like 80 bucks.

Snowc1b: I usually would consider most programs at UCLA > UCSB. I'm not a biz econ major so I'd listen to nicha89. However, one of our nobel prize laureates got it for econ so that's pretty impressive.

Cryto: The first week at UCSB is really fun. You're so foreign to all of the customs at school so upperclassmen can easily spot if you're a freshmen - which isn't a good thing haha. The activities they host consist of a lot of "getting to know each other" events where there is just loads of free food. At the end of the week they'll have a sick concert. For us, we got 3-6 mafia so that was fun. Other than that, you can journey into IV. Be warned though. Like I said, upperclassmen can spot freshmen :D

Cryto: Oh yah and about the parties getting boring...to some degree it's true. There is a generic house party that happens all the time and every weekend there is a really cool party. If you get over it though, a lot of my friends have just joined fraternities.

chesserforlife: The only transportation I've used between SB and LA is amtrak. I thought you just meant going home for weekends but you're planning on commuting back and forth between school, get a car and a parking pass. Other than that, I don't really know any other bus lines between SB and LA.

soccerplayer9238: Drinking age doesn't matter in SB. You can get into anything. LOTS of one night stands. Most relationships you'll find will occur between people you meet in your dorm not intoxicated out in IV. Everyone is extremely friendly and cliques don't matter, so you're fine with whoever you want to be friends with. Campus life is great. Read earlier posts, I talk about specifics. You can only minor in sports management at UCSB.

thnxs im pretty sure all be applying for ucsb next year...

anything u recommend to help me get into ucsb

sorry why do you care for 1 night stands or was it a concern? not to be mean, but relationships are better, you wouldnt want to consider yourself a good academic student and a slut at the same time. 1 night stands are just for people who dont know what they want in life, and i am sure since your on this website and asking questions about how to apply then your interested in your studies. hopefully it was just a random question if it isnt oright do what may interest you its not my life. like right now my situation is very hard because other than getting a car before fall if i get accepted to ucsb most likely than not i think i will, i am concerned i cant commute back to my house in los angeles everyday. with a car yes, without unless if i find out some info about how to get here with a cheap price and not amtrak or greyhound, or lax flyaway it's pretty much safe to say that I wont be attending ucsb because no way would i leave over there. I miss my home too much.
