Ask a Current UCSB Student Anything!

How is the arts program?

^ oo i wanna know that too. my major is art.

Housing: Where can I go to get descriptive details (more than the UCSB housing webpage) on specific residence halls (I’m really starting to like the sound of Santa Cruz :] ). The UCSB housing webpage is fairly generic and doesn’t provide enough info to make an educated decision unfortunately…

But what kind of information are you looking for?

Hey i googled “ucsb campus map”, a map came up and i failed to find where the gym “weight room” is on the map.
Is it the Recreation center? or does it go by another name?
and where is the public pool located at ucsb if we dont want to swim on the beach

i think its the rec center.

It says that
Saturday, Sept. 18 Opening Weekend* - Selected Halls open 8 a.m.
Sunday, Sept. 19 Opening Weekend* - Remaining Halls open 8 a.m.
Thursday, Sept. 23 Instruction Begins

So if we move in on September 18th and 19th. Then do we have to go home and come back on the 23rd? Or can we stay in the dorms once we move in?

L7TPhan…no…once you move in you can stay in the dorm…

thanks muserz. and one last one, sorry for asking so much
if you already submitted your housing contract with housing preferences, can you go back and change and sign up with a roommate?

On the housing application, do you get to indicate your dorm preference from all 8 dorms, or are they grouped together, like main campus west, main campus east, and Storke campus? Does the date that you submit your housing app affect whether or not you’ll get your first choice?

L7TPhan: yes, you can go back and change it. But i believe there is a deadline sometime in the summer.

Danamarin: They are not grouped together. They are separated into Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Manzanita Village (the houses are grouped in one), Santa Catalina, ext. The date you submit your application has no baring on what you receive, its done lottery basis. Its luck, not first come first serve.

there are i think 3 asian churches… the biggest one has a college group thing of like 30 to 50 people… i know because my mom went to visit :frowning: … i really dont want to be stuck at a church… but yea

How strongly do u suggest buying a bike? and what kind? thanks !!

If you’re not living in one of the dorms close to the central campus it is a good idea. If you’re close to classes, then you’ll get one next year when you move to an apartment in IV. As for kind, get a beater! Bike theft is unfortunately a risk, and the nicer the bike the higher the risk. Since the ground is completely flat, any simple bike will do. Keep in mind it will be sitting out in the rain, so that’s another reason not to get something too expensive (and to get one with fenders!). If you’re not going to need one until next year, the CSO office auctions off seized bikes once a quarter or so. So you can pick one up cheap while you’re in school.

Also be sure to get a bike light; either one for your helmet or a removable one that mounts on the bike. With nothing better to do, the UC cops sit along the bike path and will write tickets to those without the light.

Do you think it is important to buy a ‘fender’ for your bike?

Can you bring bikes into your room if you live in a shorty?

So I visited the campus over the weekend, I don’t exactly need housing info or a site to find the nfo anymore. But the map on the housing site is INCREDIBLY inaccurate, sizing-wise… the dorms are MUCH closer together than they appear on the map. And most of the rooms look the same (although I didn’t visit FT, currently named Santa Catalina), although there are meager variations in size. Mostly, you’re looking at location, and most of the dorms are in the same area anyways, so really not a lot of difference. Mostly, for future students, visit and check out the dorms; try and find some people living in the dorms willing to discuss with you the pros and cons of their dorm versus others, they’re pretty knowlegeable…

New question though: when should I expect my official finacial aid award letter?

^ i just know sometime in the summer after may 1st when you accept.

How can i get involved in the Ultimate Frisbee club team? I hear they’re pretty good.

Are there a lot of ATMs on campus? What is the most common bank atm?

mikemac : thanks for answering my question! :)
