Acceptance rate for out of state = 61%
Acceptance rate for in state = 41%

http://www.ucop.edu/news/factsheets/2012/fall_2012_admissions_table2.pdf

Of course the number of out of state applicants is only 10% of the number in state, but in general, if you are well qualified, I suspect your chances are better. UC needs the money that out of state tuition brings in.

It might not be appreciated by kids who grew up in California, but Santa Barbara is the one of the most exclusive places on earth to live. The chance to live there for 4 or more years is a dream for many.

How is the geology program?

lyricjohnson: I know it’s been a while since you asked your question and you may have already sought out the answer elsewhere, but I’ve heard great things about UCSB’s geology department. It has received high rankings for both the department itself, the professors within the department, and the department’s past research. UCSB is very focused on high-quality and accurate research in all of it’s departments, which definitely prepares students for future careers or education (grad school, etc.). Here’s a website I found useful: [UCSB Earth Science : Our World and National Rankings](http://www.geol.ucsb.edu/about/rankings.php) and this one for more general information about the school’s rankings: [UCSB | University of California–Santa Barbara | Best College | US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/university-of-california-santa-barbara-1320)

Thank you so much meggymack92! I’m actually a high school senior so your information is still very useful and helpful to me. I especially appreciate the websites you listed!(:

Was assigned to a dbl on a quite floor. Room mate going to another school. When will I get a room mate and will they send me the contact info prior to move in?

Do the desk in San Miguel have computer locking bolts on them?

Are the laundy machines coin or do I need to pre pay a card?

Are they computerized so they send you a text at the end of the cycle?

Hate the scented laundry products like bounce. Any Washers and dryer with no stinky stuff?

^ laundry machines require cards that they give to your free, and you fill it in the card through machines that accept cash or credit. they are not computerized but inserting the card will let you know how much you have left. sorry that is all i can answer.

I have a question guys. I am going to UCSB and I don’t know how to swim (well I do “know” how to swim I am just really bad at executing the movements - I haven’t learned how to do them well at all)… how bad is this?

^ i don’t think it’s really bad… i don’t know how to swim and i know ucsb students who don’t know either. some places you could just skim/body board and you don’t really need to know how to swim. i doubt there will be any hazardous events that would require you to swim like floods. loll. you will be fine.

Thanks for the answer, and also are there classes or clubs that teach you how to swim for free?

Here are some local opportunities for swim lessons:

[City of Goleta : Swimming](http://www.cityofgoleta.org/index.aspx?page=569)

College is an excellent time to learn to swim, as you will have time between classes and many resources available in Santa Barbara. You might be most comfortable with private lessons initially. Everyone should learn to swim, and it’s never too late to do it. Good luck to you!

Don’t body board till you learn to swim. In fact don’t do anything in the ocean till you learn to swim. Things can go bad faster than you can imagine.

By any chance, do you know if UCSB offers Italian as a foreign language course? or is it just the Italian studies course and if it is, does Italian studies teach you the language??? Please and thank you!

Also guys, I was wondering. During the summer Orientation, there was a UCSB Rec Sports presentation, and during that presentation, I think I heard something to the effect that at the GauchosPlay Fun and Fitness Festival they were giving away free bikes if you liked their page and got a RecSports wristband (which they gave away at the end of the presentation for those who attended it during Orientation). Is this true, or did I hear wrong?

Sorry guys, I just need one more question (besides the unanswered one above), and I feel this is urgent since move in-day is in less than a week. So here is the question: Should I contact my 2 roommates (call them) before I meet them face-to-face on move-in day? How recommended is this?

i highly recommend you contact your roommates first, to figure our sharing stuff like refrigerators or tvs and discussing other preferred roommate situations.

and yes there are Italian language classes.

I know this is a UCSB thread, but I have a few questions about Santa Barbara City College…

Opinion on SBCC?
Is it a guarantee to finish your generals in two years?
Or is the school over populated and affects getting the all the classes you want?
Easy transfer to UCSB?
What do you recommend for housing?

Thank you, i’ll very much appreciate your answers! :)

How good are academics?
Will the biochem major prepare me well for the mcat?
Will I be able to make meaningful friendships here or is everyone just looking to party and hook up?

Party and hook up

Hi, I just recently got accepted and I’ve decided on UCSB over UCSD!

Which dorms are the best? I’ve heard FT is the party one. Are people at FT more social? I def want to room with wherever the most freshman are going to be. However, I’m not sure I want people screaming at all hours of the day.

How strict are campus police? I’m from Portland OR, so weed is totally accepted. Are you now allowed to smoke or drink? What are the consequences?

Parking. I sure as **** am not taking the greyhound bus home and I hear Santa Barbara flights are super jacked up. Can I just drive my car and park it? Is parking expensive?

How’s Greek life?

Where are most of the parties in terms of location on/near campus?
