Hey there,
Current WashU student Class of 2017 here. Ask me anything about the school, environment, or not too in-depth questions about the admissions process. Prepare for brutal honesty!

I’m prepared. What’s the social life like? do students take advantage of St. Louis? is drinking a big part of social life there? how do campus police get along with the students?

How good really is the financial aid package? As in, is it possible to appeal if you don’t get a good enough package or is WashU basically for the rich?

Also, does applying for scholarships help increase admission prospects? Will it show the school that I’m very interested?

What is your opinion of the school so far?

Hi! Sorry for delay. :)

As to the social life question: There is definitely a party scene at WashU, more than one would expect for such studious students. Many students choose not to partake and I feel like there is negative feelings towards them for that. St. Louis kind of sucks, and WashU is pretty far removed from a lot of interesting things (the Loop is a 30 min walk from the freshman dorms, albeit does have some good restaurants and hookah). Most students stay on campus or go to student’s nearby apartments for parties, although some do go to a few local clubs. Many upperclassmen go to the same few bars. Drinking is present but there is a large part of the population that does not drink or drinks infrequently. Campus police are very good with students, I have heard nothing but good things about them so far.

Financial/Scholarships: WashU has a lot of problems with socioeconomic diversity and is NOT need blind in admissions. However, if accepted, WashU’s financial aid is definitely one of the better ones and the main factor in why I decided to attend. WashU is the only school I applied to that changed my package after negotiation (although it could’ve been significantly better). I believe that scholarship application and admission application committees are separate and thus applying for scholarships probably won’t help with admission.
