Ask a Dean at The College of New Jersey

Hey Dean,

I’m a junior in High School right now, and I just found out My GPA is much lower than expected. I went to a Vocational School my freshman year and I was truly apathetic about my future, I had no ambition of going to college, so I pretty much bombed my classes. I then realized (at the end of the year) my desire to go to college and I left that school to go to my towns high school. I had a few questions

Will colleges take my freshman year as seriously as my Junior or Senior year?

Will I damage my chances of being accepted into a college if I mention my mistakes in an interview or my essay? (I think my college essay will be about self discovery, and use the whole ‘school switching’ as an example)

This is a bit off topic, but I was wondering if you’ve ever heard of a program called naviance? It’s a website where my school uploads my grades and I can compare and search colleges. If you have, is it a reliable source or in anyway credible?

Thank you for your time and any answer you provide, going to check out your school for sure.

Dear Asb1990:

I’m sorry but I don’t know the answer to your question about transfer requirements for Health & Exercise Science. I think the best thing to do is for you to contact the School of Nursing and Health and Exercise Science directly by writing an e-mail to nursing@tcnj.edu

Best wishes,

The College of New Jersey

Dear Colle2012:

Congratulations for realizing that you want to go to College in time to have a good sophomore and junior year (and presumably senior year up next fall).

I encourage you to work hard in your essays and interviews (if you have them / many schools don’t do interviews anymore) to present your realization and change of heart to the admissions committees that will read your application. At some of the most competitive colleges and universities, the damage done freshman year might be irreparable, but at most colleges and universities the honesty of your self-analysis will be compelling (as long as the grades for the rest of your HS career are evidence that you really are focused on academic success now). Don’t be afraid to be honest: that will be helpful in making your case. Discuss the situation with your high school guidance counselor and with teachers who will write your letters of recommendation so they can address the situation with candor, too.

Naviance is a great tool. I highly recommend it as credible and useful. By comparing your statistics with those of other students from your school, you can more accurately identify reach schools and safety schools.

GOOD LUCK!

Best wishes,

Hello from an international student! I have some questions regarding international admission and aid. I hope you will help me out.

What kind of financial aid is available to international students?

Is there an international student’s organization?

What are the minimum requirements for admission?

Thanks!

Hello Confidential2015:

Our page for Int’l Student Services is [International Student Services :: The College of New Jersey](International Student Services). There is an option on the left-hand navigation bar to “apply to TCNJ,” and we would recommend that you follow the directions for F-1 students.

The admissions page: [International Applicants :: The College of New Jersey](The College of New Jersey | Undergraduate Admissions)

Unfortunately, you’ll see on the admissions website that at present there are no financial aid/scholarship opportunities for int’l students.

All int’l students are potential members of the International House project, which is a living and learning community for TCNJ students, including int’l students, with a focus on intercultural awareness. The Center for Global Engagement will be expanding its programming for int’l students in the coming academic year.

I hope this information is helpful for you and other international students interested in TCNJ.

Sincerely,

BR

healthcare admin requires grad school. It would be wise to take prep classes in administrative classes such as bus, econ and public health.also some electives in the sciences. TCNJ has a good name and reputation. Good vLuck
