Ask a GW Student...

Can you really paddleboat on the Potomac?

Yes. I can’t remember what street they are on, but if you head to the Georgetown area waterfront, there’s shops, boats, crew practices, and other activities.

Is GW diverse?

Yes. There’s people from dozens and dozens of countries, and all 50 states, with various backgrounds. Admissions has some interesting stats on exactly how many.

Do dorm repairs happen fast?

It’s hit or miss. My friends and I have had dorm repairs never get done, others take months, and others happen in an hour. You have to be patient, and also remind them of the problem. We’ve had things never get fixed, like stopped up toilets/drains, while other things (a leaking ceiling, no A/C, etc.) get fixed very quickly. Generally, I’d expect at least a few days for major tasks (if it’s flooding, however, they’ll be there fast).

**Does GW recycle?
**

Yes? I’ve never tried it, but I’ve seen their recycling bins and trucks regularly.

What should I do on the weekends?

Study. Explore DC. Go to NYC/Boston/Baltimore/regional places. Go clubbing. Do laundry. Sleep.

What mobile service should I get?

I’ve had luck with ATT. Being a decently sized city, I’m guessing most service providers would be sufficient here.

What’s your favorite local restaurant?

Unless we’re talking 5 star,… I’d say Cosi. It’s cheap enough for students, but nice enough for casual dates. And, it’s tasty (s’mores!). There’s a Krispy Kreme in Dupont, last I checked. Panera, Subway, etc. are fine for sandwiches.

Oval Room, Komi, Cafe du Parc, Obelisk, Blue Duck, Kinkead, Cava, Prime Ri, Equinox, and Circle Bistro are all typically good choices for slightly up the ladder.

What’s the best ice cream place? Dessert place?

Johnny Rockets or Marble Slab or ice cream. For dessert, Charlie Palmer Steakhouse makes good creme brulee.

Where do most people go clubbing?

Well, 930, Fur, Apex (Badlands), and Rumors are rather popular.

Is traffic really that bad? How about parking?

Yes, and yes. Traffic can be negligible, or take an hour to go a mile. Parking can be $8-40+ a day (typically $10-30). It’s a PITA.

How can I get to NYC?

Drive, train, or bus. There’s a cheap bus in Chinawtown that’ll get you there for $35, round trip.

**Does the campus really feel like a campus?
**

No, not in the traditional sense. It’s a college in a city. On one block will be your dorm, on the other block is the IMF or some other landmark/etc. But, it’s pretty obvious that you’re on campus with all of the banners, pendants, signs, etc.

Is there a lot of school spirit?

Yes and no. People wear plenty of GW shirts/hoodies/etc. But, it’s not crazy school spirit like some schools have about their football teams, painting their faces and cheering for the school (obviously, because there’s no football team here). People are typically proud that they go to GW in terms of status, but not all cheerleader-like about it.

How much spending money should I bring?

Um, depends on how much you spend? I’d at least have a few hundred a month for misc. expenses, assuming you already have a meal plan and form paid for.

How far away is transit?

There’s a subway stop on campus, by the GW Hospital. There’s also the Georgetown Connection bus that meets by the subway. There’s also the metrobus, which has a few stops around here. And, there’s the Mount Vernon Campus shuttle. There’s a decent number of cabs… handy for coming back after clubbing late at night.

Is Thurston really as wild as it is rumored to be?

See previous answer. It’s crowded, loud, and filled with freshman. There’s generally people up at all hours of the night, and the weekend partyers can be heard outside. You can meet a lot of people there.

Is there a real grocery store?

Trader Joe’s? Whole Foods? I generally go to CVS or the suburbs, or eat in restaurants.

What’s the average age of students?

For undergrads, it typically is 18-22/23. But, I’ve met some older people taking classes-- the oldest I’ve met was 60-something. There are probably more. Med, JD, and grad. programs tend to be older, more experienced adults. I’m sure you could find stats with admissions.

How can I decorate my dorm?

However, so long as there are no candles, toaster ovens, permanent damage to walls, etc.

If you mean what should you do for decor, either make a run to Target (sometimes there are buses that take freshman there once in the fall), or buy posters at the bookstore. There are usually street vendors who sell rugs/carpet remnants, posters, and “tribal” things (blankets, etc.) to affix on walls.

Where do most people go for Spring break?

I doubt there’s a sure way to tell where most people go. Most of my friends go somewhere tropical- Mexico, Belize, etc.
