Gw social scene

I'm currently a high school senior who is very interested in applying to gw. However, one hesitation I have comes from the fact that I get the impression that the social scene is dominated by fraternities/sororities. I'm the kind of guy who has more fun relaxing in coffe shop, discussing philosophy, the partying hard. Can anyone give me advice on whether of not I will fit in at gw?

Trust me, Greek life does NOT dominate the scene, though there are a few who think it does. Greek Week last year was barely noticeable, save for a blood drive in the Marvin Center or something. If you’re into partying, you’ll love it at GW.

Greek isn’t that big a deal. Something like under 1/3 even participate.

There are plenty of parties to be had all over campus and all over the city.

There’s tons of bars, coffee nights, concerts, etc.

The social scene is “monied,” but you can still usually find something you’re interested in. Yes, it’s expensive.

I’m still a freshman, but from being here for two weeks and having talked to lots of upperclassmen, Greek life doesn’t dominate anything at GW. Less than a quarter of GW is Greek, and their parties are just one of the many options for nightlife at the school.

Hi, I see that no one answered your real question, which was will you fit in if you DON’T like to party. If you read posts by Muggles in the thread on the Honors program, I think you’ll find your answer: apply to the Honors program, or maybe to the Politics and Values program, to find other like-minded intellectuals at GW. They will be there! Even in the regular school population I think you can find lots of other students who would love to talk politics, since being in DC is the big draw for most applicants.

Also, I’d recommend living on the Mt. Vernon campus. Besides having the Honors Program dorm there, kids who are more studious and quieter are more likely to end up at Mt. Vernon. And because the dorms are smaller, there’s more of a sense of camaraderie and community there than in the huge freshman dorms. You’d be less likely to be bothered by the partying there, and more likely to find kids on the same wave length as you. You can live at FB the rest of your time at GW, with the friends you make freshman year.

Good luck!
