I’m about to be a junior in high school and I am shifting my classes towards medical science and eventually become a physician assistant. I was hoping to get into UC Davis in biochem, but now I’m not sure whether to major in that or Microbiology. Would I be able to take the same classes I would if I took biochem?

Hey BMB2012 your advice is extremely helpful. I just transferred to Davis and have completed everything besides my physics series and am completing the ochem series right now.
Currently my schedule is as follows:
BIS 102-(3units)
LIN 001-(4units)
SAS 030-(3units)
CHE 118c-(4units)

I am having problems deciding my schedule for winter quarter. I have these classes set up but I still need to talk to a counselor. Can you offer me any advice?

BIS 103-(4units)
PHYS 4A-(4units)
PHYS 49-(1unit) (Physics 49 is a supplement for transfers for physics 7b)
I cannot decide whether to take STA 100 or STA 013, I can take either because I am a transfer and have permission to follow the previous catalog. (4units each)

Which Statistics class is easier and which one will I get more out of in the long-run or will help me out with biochem? I’ve heard that 13 is easier.

Besides these classes I definitely want to take advantage of the opportunity an internship has to offer. Recently I have heard of EMRAP (Emergency Medical Research Associate Program) which sounds very promising but is very selective. This internship would be a one lecture and one 4 hour shifts offering 3 units. Does this schedule sound alright to you?

I’ve heard that STA 100 is easy as well…a staff advisor told me that when she was an undergrad and took STA 100, she had absolutely no background in Statistics and still got an A. I also knew some students in my PHYS 7A class over summer who were also taking STA 100 complaining about how their STA 100 class was too easy, but it could all depend on the professor.

Hi bmb2011. I was told tercero hall is the best for science and engineering related majors such as biochemistry. Is this true? or do you have other suggestions?

Should I major in Biological Science or Biochemistry&Molecular Biology if I want to attend Pharmacy School after I graduated? Between Biological Science and Biochemistry&Molecular Biology, which major is harder?

@ Morde: Tercero is preferred by a lot of science and engineering majors because it’s the closest to the buildings where science classes are usually held (like 123 SciLec and Chem 194/Rock Hall), and you wouldn’t need to go far. So year, Tercero is the best choice if you’re a science or engineering major and want to be close to your classes.

Hi I was wondering how difficult it is to get a 3.7 gpa or higher for pre med?

@ nerdgirl: It depends on how good you are at science and math courses, primarily science. If you’re like my roommate who can get A’s in difficult science courses like NPB 101 and the CHE 118 series (O-Chem for health science majors), then a 3.7 or higher GPA for pre-med is possible (and that’s not taking into account GE classes you’d have to take along with courses that go towards your major).

what was your GPA when your graduated? and your mcat scores?

Hello, I know this thread was last active a little while ago, but I have a quick question.
I was wondering, do you go to medical school at uc davis or somewhere else? Thanks.
I just got accepted to uc davis’ biochemistry and molecular biology program and will attend fall quarter of 2015.
Hey bmb2011, if you could post your resume you wrote to get into med school that’d be great. I would like to see what it takes to get into med school. Please feel free to leave out personal info from the resume. Thanks!
Hi, I’m an incoming freshman at Davis this year and I’m thinking of premed too Got a few questions!
- Does being in the Honors college count very much?
- What kind of extracurriculars do med schools focus on? I know shadowing and research experience is valuable. I’m talking about others, personal stuff that we might do for fun. For example, soccer or orchestra or even acapella! Do med schools look at that at all? I plan on doing them anyway, but I want to know what to prioritise.
- I will be an engineering major. I am prepared to work really really hard, but in general is this a v bad idea for premed? Is it absolutely impossible to keep a 3.8+ gpa?
- I think you mentioned this before on the thread, but what kind of med schools do most UCD students go to? If I am a good student, will I get a chance at the top ranking ones like Stanford/UCSF/UPenn? (I’m interested in a career in medical research) Another reason I ask is because I’m also thinking of transferring to Berkeley after 2 years. This is because I really REALLY love the vibe at Berkeley and would love to go there, (despite the horror stories about premed and grade deflation) but will doing well at Berkeley give me better shots at the top med schools than doing well at Davis?
This is all purely hypothetical,so please, no hate. It all depends on how well I actually do in college, and whether I’m still open to medicine after 4 years.
Thanks for your patience.
