Ask a School of Cinematic Arts student! (Interactive Media)

A little bit about myself: I'm an Interactive Media major and Gender Studies minor at USC. I lived on campus in the "hipster dorm" (Parkside Arts & Humanities represent!) my freshman year, I'm involved in a number of activities relating to SCA, games, and the LGBTQ movement, I get around LA a lot and I'm one of the founding members of the joke frat Alpha Cosine Beta on Menlo. Oh, also, I'm one of three girls in Interactive Media this year!

So ask away about pretty much anything - what SCA is looking for, what the classes are like, professors, parties, where to get good sushi, the environment, avoiding bros, anything!

Hi Flintlock,

I’m a high school senior that applied to be an Interactive Media major, and of course I’m crossing my fingers that I get in. So what’s it like being an Interactive Media major? What are the classes like? How are the professors? What has your experience at USC been like so far?

Hey!

Interactive Media has basically been a dream come true. All the classes I’ve taken so far have been very interesting and in-depth, and the professors are pretty incredible. They’re all either industry professionals, game scholars, or ex-industry professionals. Not only are they well-informed teachers, they’re really enthusiastic about helping you on an individual level - my professor this semester is helping me develop a research project, and a lot of other ones are helping students get into events like Indiecade, Blizzcon or GDC and get internships. Everyone in the program is really tight-knit, and the students are really close - you’ll often find them working together on outside projects, making games, the like. The cool thing about Interactive is that, unlike a lot of other programs like it, you learn a lot about the theory of games, what makes fun fun, and a lot of fundamentals, as well as practical things like 3D-modeling or character design. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Plus, this one time John Romero was a guest speaker in class. It was amazing.

Good luck getting in! (:

Hey I’m just wondering what youre stats were if you don’t mind sharing and you can remember? Also what was your portfolio like? USC is by far my #1 choice (if not one of my only) and I just keep hoping I’ll be accepted to SCA for Interactive Media. Academically my stats aren’t great and aren’t necessarily up to USC standards but I have incredibly strong EC’s and recommendations and (I think) a really great portfolio, which I hope will help make the difference.

Hey,
I got into the Interactive Media program for Class of 2015, and while I really enjoy this field, I am also interested in getting a minor or double major in something else. I see that you have a minor in gender studies, but would it be possible to get say a double major in a different field?
I also have a few questions haha.
What made you choose USC? And how many people are in the IM major?
Thanks!

I know you are not a film major, but are there opportunities for USC students to act in films? I am a potential Biophysics/Journalism Double Major and would like to take an active part in the film scene at USC.

Do you mind sending me some of your application materials? Like essays or writing samples? I’m trying to get a feel as to what USC looks for from a student in SCA.

Flintlock;

A few questions…

How many new USC students are accepted into the Interactive Media division each year?

If not accepted as a freshman into Interactive Media, but admitted into USC otherwise, can one transfer into into Interactive Media later?

How are standard stats (GPA/SAT) weighed with one’s portfolio. Will extremely high stats help with an average portfolio?

Any additonal comments about the program and getting admitted into the Interactive Media division would be appreciated.

Thanks!
