Just a reminder that even as the school year has started, there are still Scrippsies (and parents) around to answer questions and address concerns!

Does Admissions view it favorably if a student’s goal is to get into the Claremont Graduate Economics Program?

I think it’s a neutral point. Is your goal to do the accelerated M.A. program where you begin taking CGU classes during your Scripps Senior year? Or, just to get in to CGU generally?

I think that your knowledge of the program shows a fair bit of research on your part and genuine interest, but don’t forget that at this point, your goal should be to find an undergraduate program that meets your needs and fits your interests/ don’t skip that step by looking straight at grad school!

How are the sciences at Scripps, and is it hands-on learning or more by the book? Does Scripps prepare students for the career world after college?

The sciences are very highly regarded at Scripps and the other institutions that make up our Joint Science Program; biology is consistently one of Scripps’ top 5 majors. Each science class is accompanied by a (typically) 4 hour lab once a week, so you definitely get a hands-on learning opportunity. Additionally, Scripps offers paid research assistant positions over the summer, so that students can get intensive lab work experience. It really helps when it comes to grad school or medical school applications (med school acceptance rate for Scrippsies is about 85%).

And our Career Planning & Resources office is always super friendly and helpful when it comes to internship/job search counseling. This is “Life atfer Scripps” week on campus (though I’m in denial that such a thing even exists…), and I attended a really great salary negotiation workshop led by a woman who has written several books about gender and negotiation and how women often lose out on opportunities, simply because they are less likely to ask for them/negotiate. For more examples of how CP&R helps Scripps students prepare, check out their Facebook page: [Scripps Career Planning & Resources | Facebook](Redirecting...)

Thanks!! I have another quick question though~ Does Scripps have a computer science major? I know it has a science program with chemistry, biology, etc, but I don’t know if computer science is included in that, and if not, is there anyway to major in comp sci?

Scripps students major in Comp. Sci through Harvey Mudd.

Thank you so much!

How are Scripps students seen by the other Claremont college students? Also, do Scripps students date guys from the other schools? I’ve already identified Scripps as one of my top choices but am trying to get a sense of the social scene of the school, since I’ve already discovered that it has great academics!

I would say Scripps students are viewed the same way as women from any of the other colleges-- I’ve never encountered prejudice when introducing myself as a Scripps student, inside or outside of class.

Scripps students do date guys from the other schools, but the dating scene can be really strange in Claremont, where “dates” are more likely to be meeting for a meal at the dining hall, attending an event together, or even studying at the library. My friends get REALLY excited to actually go out to a restaurant on a date. It’s cute. It can feel really difficult to meet guys during the first year, before your social network expands through off-campus classes and 5-C organizations, but it is certainly possible, and clubs especially are a great way to make friends outside of Scripps. For the sloppier side of social life at Scripps, see this article from Pomona’s The Student Life: [The View from South Campus: The Week in Parties](The View from South Campus: The Week in Parties - The Student Life)

HOw is it to make friends? does the school help?

How much does your essay count at Scripps in the admissions process? And how much do bad test scores count against you? (I got a 26 on the ACT.)

How would you rate the English major at Scripps?

Is there a good acceptance into graduate school?

How is the food at Scripps? Are there vegan meals?

What are the women like at Scripps? I like to read, play video games, write, and do other things quietly (lol). I study a lot, I’m part of tons of extracurriculars…I’m what you might call an overachiever. I hate all outdoor activities (literally). I’m supper bubbly. I’m pretty shy but I talk almost nonstop once you get to know me. I’m also a night owl. Having friends at college is really important to me, so I’m curious how well I would socially fit at Scripps.

Scripps has a pretty holistic view of applications, so your scores won’t automatically rule you out. If your grades do a better job of showing your academic readiness, then I’m sure they will also consider that. The essay does mean quite a bit. They will read it, and it’s an important part of how they gauge how you will add to the Scripps community.

The English major at Scripps is very well-established, and the professors are awesome (as you can tell I’m hardly speaking objectively). The great thing about English at Scripps is that it’s one of the larger departments, meaning there are quite a few options each semester, from Poetry to Graphic Novel to British Lit, as well as the offerings and specializations from the other colleges in the consortium. I would definitely give it 4.5 stars (it would get the other .5 stars if there was more support among all the English faculty for self-designed writing majors, but some professors instead believe in only a traditional English curriculum).

I don’t know what the acceptance rate is, but I know the enrollment rate into grad school is about 65% within 5 years.

The food is great- there are always vegan entrees (there is a section that houses vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free offerings each meal), but I will admit there are not always many vegan options at Scripps. The nice thing about the consortium dining hall system is that you can check online and see what is available at all the other colleges as well. Pitzer always has many vegetarian and vegan options, and is only a 3-4 minute walk from Scripps.

There is no “typical” Scripps student, so there are groups of students doing a variety of things. Orientation week really helps Scripps students to get to know one another and make friends, but in September was also have a 5-C club fair on the Scripps lawn- an opportunity to learn about and get involved with extracurriculars like “Get Your Nerd On,” The Scripps Voice student paper, the student knitting club, or Challah for Hunger (a group that bakes and sells bread for charity). From your description of yourself, it doesn’t seem like you’d hurt for friends in Claremont. I think you could definitely find your niche here. There are an equal number of students who like to go out and dance and be raucous (on the other campuses), and students who would rather stay on Scripps and do quieter activities, though sometimes board game nights can get pretty loud :P

Hello~ I was wondering how affordable it would be to attend Scripps. I looked at their website and it showed that many students were able to get a scholarship ( which i think would be the only option for me because I don’t think I will qualify for aid). How competitive are these scholarships and do you know what they are based on? Also, one of the members posted on this forum about having bad test grades ( ACTs SATs etc) but for me it is the opposite. Right now my GPA is around a 3.8 because my school is highly competitive and is ranked one of the top high schools in the country for math and science. Do you think this will be taken into account when reviewing my grades? Thanks

Hi Aamori,

It’s true that Scripps comes with quite the sticker price, but about 65% of students receive some form of financial aid: scholarships, grants, loans, workstudy or a combination there-of. You can read more about the available merit scholarships here: [Merit-Based Scholarships | Scripps College Admission](http://admission.scrippscollege.edu/scholarships)

But it’s important to note that several of the scholarships have an application deadline of Nov. 15, which is coming right up! These are very competitive scholarships, and they’re based largely on academic achievement- though they’re also based on an interview conducted at the finalist stage of the process.

Admissions officers look at every student in context of their high school, so they’ll be able to see your grades and gpa within the larger context of your academic situation.

As someone who really relied on financial aid packages when making my own college decision, my advice would be to apply regardless of whether you think you will be able to afford it, because sometimes the financial aid packages will surprise you (positively and negatively), but you won’t be able to know for sure until the spring! With the merit aid offered by Scripps, it became even more affordable than attending my state’s flagship university.

Hi, I’m a bit confused by the common app Scripps supplemental essay guidelines because it says to limit the supplemental essay to 2000 characters or less than one page. Does one page refer to one page double spaced or single spaced and does the character count include spaces or not?

HI, I applied to Scripps ED and submitted my application on Oct. 14, 2011. I was wondering how early I could possibly hear back from Scripps. The admissions office says that decisions will be released “Mid-December.” Is it possible to hear back earlier than this?
Thanks!

Scripps doesn’t do rolling admission, so everyone will hear back on the same date in the ambiguous “Mid-December.” Try to distract yourself with other things until then. :)

Can someone tell me how the interviews are at Scripps? I just scheduled one and it’s only my second one (my other one was at Pomona). Is it similar to Pomona’s laid-back interview?

While I’m interested in hearing EI’s perspective, I thought I’d share with tamtastic my observations from my D’s interview at Scripps in late September, early October. Coming out of the interview she felt pretty comfortable, which is saying something seeing that she is quite shy and reserved. It was very much a conversation, where the admissions officer asked questions to get to know my D, about what attracted her to Scripps, and so forth. She also had an opportunity to ask questions. All and all, it was a pretty low-key affair.
