If you like to cycle, bring a bike or buy a bike. There are a few kids who like to ride (road/mountain) and the local store (Pedal Power) runs a lot of rides.

thx for the info on the meal plans skie/weskid.

So on the academic calendar it says we should arrive (transfers at least) for orientation on August 28th, but it also says undergrad housing opens on September 1st. What's the deal? Do we not actually move into our dorms until then and if not, where do we stay for those few days?

how was the on campus interview? i just scheduled mine and I was wondering what goes on lol.

brand: if the academic calendar says transfer arrive August 28, then your housing should be open. the "undergrad housing opens" is for all returning students. freshmen moving in on the 28th will movie into their dorms, so you will as well

sgtpepper: the on campus interview is conversational and informal. the interviewer won't be hiding behind a clipboard firing questions like "what can you contribute to wesleyan?" the interviewer will figure that out by talking with you, about who knows what. I've heard students talked about the NFL, about politics, and in my case, the county we were both from. just be relaxed and speak your mind on whatever is brought up.

thx smartalic that's what I figured I just wanted to make sure I didn't need to get a hotel for several days or something.

So I have a quick question. I am also a transfer entering in as a sophomore and I'm kinda worried about housing. For some reason, I missed the housing application that I guess was sent out in June, so I had no input into my housing situation. I got placed (randomly I guess) into a house called 230 Washington Street. All the ResLife office would tell me is that it is an old house and it has mostly sophomores. Can someone who knows the campus give me the low down on 230 Washington?

230 Wash is a really, really nice house. It's also on Washington Street - which means it's a bit of a walk to get anywhere else on campus. (That's why people complain about it - it IS annoyingly far away from everythign else to live). However, it's really great for transfers, because the house community helps you ease into campus socially - and in the end, everyone I know who lived there really liked it in the end. Also, the kitchen is HUGE. (i think - unless that's 202 wash - but I think it's 230). The whole house has a lot of students (30 maybe?) so you definitely won't be socially isolated. I think it's actually a pretty good option, so don't stress about it :)

Thanks so much madjoy. That makes me feel better. Although I am not so into walking, a close knit community seems like a good way to start off. Thanks fo replying so quickly.

New subject. My S, who'll be a freshman in the fall, got the "common reading" assignment in the mail today - and it's a DVD of a modern dance concert! I think that is so cool (and the Ronald K. Bown Dance company is wonderful). Leave it to Wes to come up with a unique way of doing things!

Oh yeah. I think they started that last year (right?). Encorage your S to go if they have a performance like Bill T. Jones's (the one we did) company did last year. I didn't go and regret it because everyone who went--including the least dance oriented people ever--loved it.

My future roommate and I are both transfer students and we're wondering whether microwaves are allowed in the dorm rooms. They were allowed at my first college and they're pretty useful. Also, what are the maximum dimensions for fridges for the rooms?

Yes, you can have a microwave. As for fridges... I'm sure whatever you have is fine. I've seen some pretty big ones (with separate freezer and fridge), and I think the only limiting factor is being able to carry the thing.

anyone know about the rooms in westco? i'm in a double, not sure if it's 1 or 2 room...assuming i have a 1 room, is there space for a small (1.7 cubic feet) fridge? how about 2 room? are there closets and things?

Hahaha. There are only a couple of one-room doubles in WestCo (in WestCo 2, I think) and they are HUGE. Like, really huge. Probably the biggest one room doubles on campus (with some competition from some in the Butts). You have nothing to worry about in bringing a small fridge over.

As for the two-room doubles - they're a little less roomy. Each person gets a comfortable single room. There are either closets or a dresser-closet thing either way. I would think that either way, there is definitely room for a small fridge :)

When does the Wesleyan application usually go up on the website? It says that there is a pre-application: is this the only supplement to the common app? If so, what exactly does it entail? How helpful is it to request an interview? thankss

What renovations are currently being made to the campus? I see that they are renovating the student center and such--how long have these changes been going on, and when are they expected to be completed?

They are building the new campus center right now. Its been going on for a coupleof years, but it's supposed to be done by the time school opens this fall :D (Then they are going to build a new science building of some sort).

As for the pre-app, as of when I applied two years ago, it was the only supplement to the common app, and really didn't involve much more than sending in some basic info on yourself and maybe a little money. Wes basically just has the common app, no extra essays or anything.

Also, those one room doubles in WestCo really are ridiculously big. It's insane.

As for building: here's the Wes Master Plan from 2002: http://www.wesleyan.edu/masterplan/mpprocess.htt

Most of these projects are now completed or will be come Fall (Usdan campus center).

Major projects still to be undertaken (and which will not be completed for several years at best): Molecular and Life Science Building; University Museum.

the Usdan center should be done in the next 2-3 weeks. in about 2009 or 2010, construction will begin on the new molecular/life sciences building. funding is still underway for both the science building and the university museum (which will occupy the squash building next to the Usdan center)
