Ask an Admission Counselor

Hi Jessica! I saw your post on the other thread - I’m going to respond with the same message in both places just to make sure you see it!

We pay attention to the growth that students show over the course of their educational history, and it sounds as though you’ve really shown tremendous growth as you’ve progressed through the different institutions. We understand that sometimes life gets a little in the way, but it sounds like you were able to overcome that as time went on, which is what we love to see! I think this will stand out in the review process. It’s hard to say with certainty what your decision will be without having the other pieces of your application as context, but it sounds like you’re on a good path. I’m hopeful that we might be able to provide a positive result to the process for you!

Please let me know if you have additional questions or concerns through the process. We’re here to help!

Hi Nicole, can you tell me how long it typically takes to make a decision on acceptance? Thanks!

Hi @Jessicasmiles , it depends on the time of year and the type of application, but it typically takes a few weeks after an application is complete. As you are a potential transfer student, I’d say it’s usually maybe a week or two between completing your app and getting a decision. If you’d like, you can reach out to Julia Caminiti, our transfer counselor, to see where your application is currently in the process. Her email is caminiti[at]champlain.edu (trade out the [at] with the @ symbol - I just didn’t want her to get hit by spam bots that might pull her email address off this page!).

Hi Nicole, can you break out the relevant statistics for the Gaming-related majors, vs. the overall stats (e.g., Avg ACT/SAT scores, GPA, etc.)? It seems like Gaming is much more competitive, and it would be great to have a sense as to the difference. Thanks!

Hi @mjrube94 , I don’t have exact statistics, but academically the students in those programs tend to be similar to our overall accepted averages - around a 3.3 GPA, 26 composite ACT, and around a 570 or so in each area of the SAT (or around 1710 combined). The only exception to this is Game Programming, for which we typically see a higher GPA and higher test scores, particularly around the math and science areas. I don’t have an exact average for that major, but I would say we tend to see the SATs closer to the 600s and a higher GPA in general.

The significant difference that makes the other two majors so competitive is the portfolio component. The portfolio is very heavily weighted in the consideration for our Game Design and Game Art & Animation programs, and can make the difference between whether or not we offer the students a space in those programs.

I know this doesn’t address the full question, but I hope this provides a better context to the difference!

Hi Nicole, My daughter is interested in Champlain and has taken her ACT twice. I have a couple of questions about this: Do you “superscore” the subsections? Do you look at the subsections? We are trying to figure out whether to pay to send both because on the second one, some subsections went up a lot, but the math went down, even though the overall composite went up to a 25. If you superscore the sections, her composite would be a 26. And she only took the essay once but got an 8. Thanks!

Hi @Gertrude11 , I’m pleased to hear of your daughter’s interest in Champlain! When students have taken the ACT multiple times, we take the highest score from each section, but we do not superscore the composite (the method we follow is as recommended by ACT themselves). We do look at each of the subsections and would see the overall improvement between the two test times, so even though it wouldn’t increase her overall highest composite, we’d still be able to see the growth in each area and would keep this in mind in the review process.

I hope that helps. Let me know if I can provide additional clarification or answer any other questions!

My son just received his acceptance letter to Champlain and we are very excited for him. Unfortunately the aid the school offers is very low, and the tuition very high. I spoke with a very nice person in the financial aid office and they would file an appeal on his behalf. Do you know if typically these appeals bring forth a better FA package? Given that we had no choice but apply ED, I am anxious that they won’t be able to open up the purse strings wider before the ED2 and RD dates in the spring, and the deposit it due in 3 weeks. Makes the process very difficult.

@connorbunk, just curious why you had no choice but to apply ED?

Hi @connorbunk, first and foremost, congratulations to your son on his acceptance! We had a competitive first wave of applicants, so he should be very proud of the application he put forth!

It can be hard as financial aid packages can vary based on a variety of factors from a lot of information we have about a student. However, I’m glad that you’ve been in touch with our Financial Aid Office already to discuss what might be feasible. While there is no guarantee, I have absolutely seen appeals be successful in helping to make the school more financially feasible for students. As I mentioned, it really depends on a lot of factors; but I do know that our FA Office will do what they can to see what more they might be able to do to help. They will talk you through what options might be available. Your son has been accepted because we feel like he’d be a great fit here, so we want to do what we can to try to help him attend. The benefit of having applied Early Decision is that our FA Office is working with fewer students at this point in the cycle, and can put forth extra individualized attention to your appeal.

I am hopeful that we will find a way for your son to attend! If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

Does Champlain offer an accepted student’s day in the spring and if so, what is the date for 2016? Thanks.

@carly135 Sorry for my delay. We sure do offer Accepted Student Days! We have two dates, April 2nd and April 16th. You can register for them and learn more here: http://www.champlain.edu/admitted-students/admitted-fall-undergraduate-students/admitted-student-event

Thank you @NicoleChamplain

Hi…When will regular decision notifications begin rolling out? My son applied to the Graphic Arts program. Thanks.

I received my acceptance for regular admissions today way ahead of most other regular applicants, does this mean that I will probably be getting merit scholarships?

Hi @Dennymac , we started to roll out decisions for Regular Decision at the end of last week. However, portfolio majors do take a bit more time, as they need to be reviewed by faculty; therefore, we expect there to still be a few more weeks before we release our portfolio major decisions. I expect that most will be out by the beginning of March!

Hi @isaf33 , congratulations on your acceptance!! We did start to release decisions for non-portfolio majors a bit earlier this year. It does not necessarily indicate anything in particular regarding financial aid; your merit aid depends more on your academic strength. You should be receiving a financial aid package within the next few weeks that will give you a better sense of things. Please also feel free to reach out to the Financial Aid Office in the meantime; they can be found at finaid[at]champlain.edu.

@NicoleChamplain Thank you! I appreciate the help.

@NicoleChamplain Two hours ago my son received an email invitation to register for accepted students day but we have not received a decision packet and we can’t find anything online about being accepted when we log into his account. The invitation says “Congratulations on your acceptance!” Does this mean he’s in? I’m hoping it was not an error email that just went out to everyone! He is in a portfolio major.

Never mind. The Champlain admissions department sent my son the “congratulations on your acceptance!” email by mistake. What a shitty day. :frowning:
