Ask an Admission Counselor

^ We will be back! (My son was the only junior in the room ;))

Ah hah! Well in that case, tell him I apologize if I embarrassed him by praising him for being so ahead in the process…sometimes my enthusiasm for such things can be overwhelming. :)

Hello,

My son has applied for early admission to your college this year. Your school is his first choice. I was wondering if the later deadline for submissions will delay the decision process. When do you expect to notify the applicants of their status?

Thanks!

Hi jenifish,
We are doing our best to ensure that the application decisions for Early Decision I still go out on the same date we intended - going in the mail on December 15th. If a student’s file is completed after Friday’s deadline, it may be slightly delayed in going out in the mail. We are trying our best to get them all out by our committed date, regardless of the bumped back deadline!

Thank you for the prompt response, Nicole. You must get a lot of questions from anxious students and parents.

Hi jenifish,

We certainly do! I always try to make sure when I speak with students and families to be clear that the decision goes IN the mail by Dec. 15th, as opposed to GETTING it on the 15th, but I still handle a few panicked phone calls on that date every year. We understand the emotion, though - we know it’s an exciting and nerve-wracking time for everyone!

Hi Nicole!

I wasn’t sure who to ask these questions, but if you don’t have the answers would you direct me to the correct department/individual?

I am aware Champlain allows a student to transfer from another college, but more specifically will a student be allowed to transfer into the Game Programming major?

If a student takes summer classes at a college near home would the credits be transferable to Champlain? What classes would the student be able to take (core, electives, major)?

What type of support is available to students who are struggling in classes?

What type of services/accommodations are available to students with learning challenges?

What health facilities are available on campus and locally?

Thanks for your assistance.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!

Oh my goodness student4ever, I’m so sorry I hadn’t responded yet! I saw this over the Thanksgiving break and completely forgot to come back in to respond!

1 & 2. Transferring into any of our Game Production-related majors is a bit more complicated. I would recommend that anyone considering transferring first speak to our Transfer Counselor, Shawn McElwain. He can be reached at (802)383-6644 or mcelwain@champlain.edu, and he can explain in more detail. He could also suggest what courses to take that would transfer in well to Champlain.

3 & 4. We have a few different sources of student support. We have one-on-one tutoring available; we also have peer-to-peer student support labs, which include an Accounting & Math Lab, an Oral Communications Lab, and a Writing Center. Finally, students can also qualify for an hour a week free of academic mentorship & coaching, which is provided through a partnership with the Stern Center, a local professional academic coaching center. There’s also other counseling services available.

On campus, we have a nurse practitioner, as well as a doctor on-call. We’re about three blocks away from the largest hospital in Vermont, which has a Level 1 trauma center available, as well as an emergency department, for anything that needs a higher level of care.

Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I apologize again for my delay!

Anyone have any perspective on applying ED vs RD? My S applied ED II because Champlain is one of his top schools. He’s a gamer through and through - if he’s not playing, he’s critiquing games, debating games or sketching out concepts for new games. So he’s really excited about the Game Design program. He applied ED II because we thought that the program might get filled up if we applied RD, but my wife also has concerns that applying ED would possibly limit us on merit scholarships since you’re supposed to be willing to pay the full rate if applying ED. I’m kind of torn and thinking about withdrawing ED and changing it to RD, but I don’t want to hurt his chances of getting into the program. Any thoughts?

Well this is Nicole’s thread but I will say that as a parent, this statement is not true (of any college).

ED candidates are entitled to the same consideration of financial resources as RD candidates. ED is not intended to be a “full price” option. (See: http://thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/01/12/kantrowitz-part-4/</a> and scroll down to the fourth question).

There are many, many people here on cc who will tell you it is insane to apply ED as you cannot compare aid packages. In my son’s case, where he attends will be equally as important as cost. I hope we can afford his first choice but we will not be deciding based on cost alone (as is often advocated on this forum). If he decides to apply to a college ED, I will support it.

(I will say that Champlain’s net price calculator is the most broad and opaque I have yet seen…)

Thanks for the link, that’s helpful, and kind of what I assumed. Does anyone know if Champlain has a site to check on the status of an application? I’ve searched many times and I can’t find anything.

Hi jrossi266 (and Snowdog),

Sorry to be jumping in a little late to comment on yesterday’s posts! Snowdog, thank you for starting to answer some of the questions; I figured I’d jump in and address some of the questions and concerns as well.

Applying ED doesn’t prevent a student from being considered for merit-based aid, as Snowdog said above. However, I would echo the sentiment about if cost is a considerable factor; ED makes it difficult (or in some cases, not possible) to compare aid packages from different schools. Early Decision is intended for a student who is saying “This is my first choice school, and I want to do what I can to attend if I’m accepted.” While Early Decision is binding, we will take it into consideration if the cost is too much for your family. If your son is accepted for Early Decision and the initial financial aid package isn’t enough, we can do a financial aid appeal in order to see if there’s any further aid that we might be able to offer. If there isn’t, we can then allow you to break that binding decision.

While it is a competitive program, please know that we don’t fill up all of our available spaces in the major with Early Decision students. It does tend to get more competitive in Regular Decision by nature of there being more applications for fewer students, but in the end what is most important is the strength of the portfolio and the academic ability of the student, as well as their fit for our program and the school as a whole.

I do understand that the Net Price Calculator is a bit broad. This is because our financial aid packaging is incredibly individualized, so there’s very few factors we could plug in there that could show up as scholarships or grants that would be “guaranteed”. I encourage you to reach out to the Financial Aid Office to start a conversation with them, if you have more specific questions about it. A good starting point is their main email - finaid@champlain.edu.

Lastly, we do not currently have a website on which you can check the status of an application; however, we are in the final stages of building one! I don’t know when it will be officially launched - it is being taken care of by our Admissions Operations Staff and IT - but we hope it will be ready to go by the time the Regular Decision deadline rolls around, if not earlier than that! In the meantime, your son can reach out to his admissions counselor to check on his status. We are divided up by region, so you can figure out who will be working with him here: [Champlain College | Undergraduate Admissions Staff | Undergraduate Admissions](Undergraduate Admissions Staff | Undergraduate Admissions | Champlain College)

I hope I helped address most or all of your questions - please let me know if you have any others!

Will the notices go out via email today?

Hi prancer18,

Most of our decisions for Early Decision 1 went into the mail on Friday; others are going into the mail today. We’re trying to get them out as soon as possible!

Do the students get an email notice ahead of the regular mail?

And how long after the decisions come in the mail will the financial aid information be available. Thanks!

We do not send out an email notice ahead of time - we still notify via traditional letters. The Financial Aid package should arrive within a week or less of the decision; I believe the ED financial aid packages are going out at the same time.

Thank you!

Hi I applied ED and still haven’t heard back. I live in Ohio…should I be worried?

Hi!

My son applied ED to the game design program and had to submit a portfolio with his application. His decision letter wasn’t mailed until Wed. last week. We just received his decision letter in the mail last night. We live in CT. Hopefully yours is on its way. Good Luck!
