Ask an Exeter Mom

This is a thread for all the parents whose teens were recently accepted to Exeter. My child is a prep (freshman) boarding student. I received a lot of help from parents on this board last year and would like to pay it forward. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about our experience thus far. Kids can feel free to ask questions also!

First post here on CC. I’ve been silently benefiting for many months (er, lurking). Thank you all, and thank you PA-C for your past help and your willingness to keep helping. My S will be a new prep at PEA this fall. We are excited beyond words for him. We live locally, needed lots of FA, and we didn’t have a major hook. Needless to say, we feel like we won the lottery…Wow. We spent the last several weeks disciplining ourselves against excessive optimism and working to help S see success in terms that would minimize the impact of Exeter’s decision one way or the other. I guess we’re still in shock.

Congrats! We also live locally and our son had no major hook so I know what you mean about cautious optimism! Will your son be a boarder or a day student? Our son boards which was an experience for me as well! Please feel free to ask anything- here or via private message. Welcome to College Confidential!

PA-C, are you applying for FA from Exeter this year? Reading your prior posts, you were right on the borderline when your son was admitted.

Day student. We’re re-visiting April 1 and we’re sooo psyched…Since news of his acceptance he’s been playing basketball outside in the mud for hours on end and is unreachable by all but the dinner bell. Already, it seems, he’s with his new class in mind and spirit.

We think he’ll do fine. We’re suggesting a fun elective and a commitment to at least 1 outrageously fun EC. Theater? Drama Club?

Lots of kids love theater at Exeter and I actually spoke with a mom here on CC who is involved with the theater program who said there is a theater sports the students can choose for their gym component at least as a 10th grader- maybe not as a prep though.

My son signed up for chess club, model UN, ski club and computer science club I think. However, he has not done too much with any of them this year- I think he was getting a hold of his time management. Also, I think the talent/competition at the chess club surprised him a bit! LOL Plenty of his friends are more active in clubs though…
One super fun extracurricular is the Exonian (school paper) but I have heard it’s very time consuming. Also he can try out for basketball if that’s his thing. Our son tried out for two sports this year but was not competitive enough to make the team. Neither were any of his friends who tried out. The competition is stiff if you were not recruited for the sport. There are club sports which you can start playing when you are a 10th grader. Preps (9th graders) must take prep spaz (junior sports program) unless they make a JV or V team.

My son has also done some fun things that aren’t technically clubs but were activities. His dorm went bowling, he volunteered to set up for the dorm dance and also for the chinese new year dinner. He attended a concert by a famous pianist. He does take piano lessons too for credit.

Benley: we are thinking about applying for FA but unless something bad happens (layoff, cut hours) at work we were told we probably won’t qualify again this year. Next year DD might go to private school and then we SHOULD qualify for some help- I hope! :P

Hi RaintoMars,
I am new to CC. My daughter just got accepted to Exeter as well for 9th grade. We are also visiting on the 1st. I just discovered CC since a newly admitted student mentioned it on her Facebook post. Nice to meet another parent. CC has been a wealth of info!

Thank you so much PA-C. Your posts have been so helpful. My daughter just got accepted. Of course, we are so excited! She is really interested in theater. Your post said something about a mom involved with the theater program. Does that mean local parents can volunteer?

Hello momofexonian,

Looking forward to meeting you on the 1st --we’ll be the dazed and giddy parents

I’ll PM you if I can (not sure if I have enough posts yet).

I’m sorry, I don’t know if you can volunteer in the theater program. This mom was a staff member.

I’m sure you won’t be alone!
