Thanks OSULolz…you are the best!! :)

Thanks, OSULolz, so much great info on this thread. Do you know anything about the business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi and how active it is?

What is life like for an out of state student(from Georgia)?

What dorms are best for an out of state who wants to stay focused. What is the best place to stay on campus.

I am planning on transferring to OSU. What is some advice you can give me? What should I avoid? what should I do? Who should I speak to?

I want to get really involved and make the most of my buckeye experience. I’m a chemistry major, I am pre-med/pharm/dent. I have to stay focused, but I know how to have fun. (SEC anyone? haha)

How accepting are the students generally? In the sense that… do you know a lot of people who would not want a gay roommate?

OScarlett–

I was not involved in Greek life personally, so this is the only help I can give you, sorry! : http://www.buckeyeakpsi.com/

halcyontimes–

Those are pretty vague questions; North campus is typically stereotyped as being more ‘study oriented,’ but let me know if you have more specific questions

Vanechka–

I would say that students are pretty accepting here…like most college campus areas, there is probably more of a liberal vibe, so I wouldn’t worry. When signing up for student housing, you can note sexuality when describing yourself so that you are matched appropriately.

How about classes closest to the chemistry/biology buildings? I am going in as a biology major.

Also, how hard is calc II at OSU?

Do they actually read your housing survey and pair you up with a good match? Because I heard in other colleges that they don’t and just put you in randomly

What’s the social life like at OSU? Like what do people do on weekends, weeknights, etc? Thanks so much!!

I definitely would not want to be intentionally placed with other gay guys lol.

On the topic of housing, what is the largest number of people you have lived with, and what number did you like most? All we have here are doubles.

halcyontimes–

I am fairly sure that chem/bio courses are mainly located around central campus (ex. Smith Lab).

I didn’t think calc II was terribly hard, but that may depend on your lecturer/TA. My lecturer for that course wasn’t the greatest (I really never went), but my TA was fantastic. It would also help if you know someone who has taken it before so that you can see example midterm questions, formats, etc. I took Pre-Calc/Calc/Calc II and got A-/A/A respectively. It’s definitely a course you need to put a LOT of work into though (homework, practice, studying, etc) and I think we had a small extra credit opportunity as well.

happpysuits–

I think for that, it definitely helps if you turn in your housing form early. The earlier you turn it in the more they will be able to accommodate your specific requests; if you turn it in last minute, they don’t have many options. Freshmen year, I turned it in late and did not end up where I wanted to be (although it ended up being AWESOME and am glad it turned out that way). Sophomore / Junior years I turned in housing the day I was eligible, and got exactly the dorm/room size / roommate that I requested.

OSU definitely has plenty of social activities. Probably one of the most popular is called the Gateway, which is a cluster of bars/restaurants/movie theater on South Campus. Here’s a link that will provide some more info: [South Campus Gateway](<a href=“southcampusgateway.com -”>http://southcampusgateway.com/)

Also, High Street in general is our main source for other bars/restaurants/hang outs. Here’s a website showing what is available along there. Some popular spots are Big Bar, Ugly Tuna (@ Gateway), Little Bar, etc. [Columbus, OH | Dine In Restaurants | eathighst.com | Ohio State University](http://www.eathighst.com/DineIn.aspx)

I lived in a quad in Siebert, a super double in Drackett, and a super double in Morrill. Siebert (4) was the most I lived with…the group of guys on my floor were great though and I loved living there. Drackett was probably my favorite in terms of size/location…especially the separation of sleeping/study rooms that Siebert lacked. Morrill was probably the best for personal space. It’s basically a room divided down the middle so you each have your own space for desks (huge) and sleeping…again with two rooms.

Since I can’t seem to find it anywhere, do you know what Pennsylvania Place rooms look like?

Here is the website, but for some reason it is missing a floor plan; I’m not really sure what those rooms look like

OSULolz, wondering if you can provide some general info on scholarships available once you are a student at OSU (S is pre-business, so assume will remain business and will be admitted to his major during/after freshman year)…primarily any general scholarships based on maintaining a certain GPA…we are also OOS, if that even matters. Thanks!

Here’s the FCOB scholarships page–very useful: [Fisher College of Business | Scholarships](http://fisher.osu.edu/undergraduate/scholarships)

Through this, I was able to get an additional $3,000 per year with my specific scholarship.

Obviously the FAFSA is very important; I also got the Scarlet and Grey Grant ($3000 per year) by simply filling this out.

You can apply for special scholarships every year, due around the same time as the FAFSA, although I’m not sure I ever received more aid from it. [Scholarship Programs - Student Financial Aid - The Ohio State University](Web Login Service | The Ohio State University)

Besides those, most of my financial aid was there from the get go (Provost Scholarship, Pell Grant, unsubsidized/subsidized loans)

Couldn’t decide. Ended up putting Worthington over Residences at 10th, hopefully that was a good choice lol.

OSULolz (and any others that have been/had kids at OSU)
Please look at the new “orientation” thread.

Thanks

JohnKS–answered, and here’s my answer again:

I worked at Orientation for a summer—I would definitely only send one parent if it will save the money a flight will cost. Mostly just informational sessions, they’ll give you packets too so the other can read.

Really, it’s only imperative that the student goes. I don’t think my Mom learned anything super important

Hello OSULolz. This is going to be a weird question, but my parents are curious about the Korean community at Ohio state. To be honest, I do not think it is a big deal, but my parents are very uh. cultural. I’m basing my decision off of the subject school, but my parents continue t wonder about this. If you could answer that’d be great and if things work out I might be there soon

HelpNeeded25–

Ohio State is a very diverse place; after Caucasian, I would say that those of Asian heritage make up the 2nd largest group of students (especially in business).

Here’s a link to the Korean Student Association if that helps too, perhaps you can get in contact with one of them
