I’m really most curious about why UChicago is so secretive about the admissions release date.

(I know someone else asked this, I’m just throwing my support behind that question in the hopes of it getting answered.)

Oh, me too, @heinochus. There’s really no reason to - it’s torture!

According to an admissions officer last year, they are so secretive because they won’t want to disappoint. She said that if they were to name a date and something went wrong (for some reason they couldn’t meet the date), their office would be inundated with calls and emails and parents and students would begin to panic. They just do it to be safe; this way, you will still get decisions at the same time, but they don’t have to worry about making some predetermined deadline. :)

Is it too late to send a copy of my parents’ income tax returns?

I’ve already submitted the UChicago financial aid application, just haven’t sent off the tax returns yet.

thanks!

Good evening Grace. I hope this message finds you well. Having just sent in my App now, is it still possible to have an alumni interview?

Is there any way to get feedback on any of my essays or application?
Like can the regional counselor for my state leave a few comments like good essay, or persuasive or what?

@Lewa: If that were true, then why wouldn’t they at least release the date a few days beforehand? AFAIK they aren’t exactly selecting people right up until decisions are released. In fact, they seem to be done several days beforehand. Why couldn’t they make an announcement then, as many schools seem to do?

(Note that I’m not attacking you or anything. I’m grateful that somebody responded, I’m just curious :))

Oh, I was just paraphrasing what an admissions officer said last year. From the blog:

“Here’s the deal with EA decisions–we don’t like to give out an exact date in case something goes wrong and for some reason we can’t release the decisions on that exact date. You guys are already freaking out so much, that I’m sure if we said a day and for some reason you didn’t hear on that day, you would call, e-mail, visit, teleport, etc. in a panic. And you don’t need to stress yourselves out more than you already are.”

I’m not so sure that they’re done several days beforehand; of course, they must have chosen to admit a good portion of the incoming class days before decisions are released, but they may still be hotly debating certain cases. We don’t really have any way of knowing, I guess. There is also the possibility that they are working out all the technical difficulties and making sure their website can handle the traffic / doesn’t have any bugs before sending out the emails. A broken website would be another cause for panic among applicants.

^And making sure all the acceptances go to the right people, for snail mail decisions :)

Guys, seriously, the only reason you’re all so worked up is because you tell yourself it will be one day (i.e., today) and then it isn’t. I assumed from the beginning it was going to be tomorrow; if it isn’t, well, then I’ll start to stress. Right now UChicago hasn’t disappointed in any regard, really.

@EnAll- if you are an RD applicant, you have until Jan. 8 to request an alumni interview through your Chicago Account, so you may do so there.

:( UChicagoPSAC, why can’t you answer the juicy questions?

(I know, I know, you’re tied by the University. But still!)

@emachines- you’ll need to check with the financial aid office (we function separately) for more information on this one.

@Everyone, forever: Yes, we don’t announce decision dates ahead of time because we don’t want to disappoint. We get enough calls/e-mails from people as is; in past years when we have announced and missed (even slightly) an announced deadline the response has been literally overwhelming. As we really only know when things can go out a max of a few days in advance, and do need to spend that time making sure that everything is correct and ready to go instead of fielding questions for early access to decisions (not an option!!) or worries that people haven’t gotten things exactly on time, it’s in everyone’s best interest that we just let them out when we’re ready to, and let you know at that time. You’ll know soon enough; we’ll announce it on the blog, and you’ll get both a paper mailing and directions as to how to access your decision through your Chicago Account. For now, go outside and play in the snow.

Alas, there is no snow in arizona. However, there are finals. 'Tis unfortunate, I must say.
Thanks for answering that question though. It’s really nice of you to come online in the midst of a frenzy like this.

Working in admissions, frenzies are my specialty :)

Just curious, but why are you guys closing early tomorrow (it says that you’re closing at 3:00 PM on the admissions site)?

Thanks for that response. I guess it must be pretty annoying to have to respond to various iterations of what is essentially the same question…but I just wanted to be sure. :)

haha yeah frenzies are something. I just can’t wait to get a decision and not think about it anymore.
Stupid 54% increase in applications…ughhh

It was snowing here in Washington . . . but it turned to rain :P

Can’t wait for decisions Thanks for all of your help!
