Ask away- it's UChicago Prospective Students Advisory Committee

^ hi. i live in new hampshire…i neither visited the campus nor requested an interview. if you do the latter, then you are already better off than i was! however, i was still fortunately accepted RD. i think i stated my interest well enough in my “why chicago,” so don’t feel at a disadvantage if visiting is inconvenient! :)

@Maxxwell- I’m sorry if you have received conflicting information; we have not in the past sent out notifications to students who were not awarded merit scholarships, and I am not aware of any change in this for this year. I am also speaking only about College Honors and University Scholar scholarships, not scholarships tied with financial aid or National Merit-linked scholarships.

UChicagoPSAC: For the overnight program for accepted students-- how many usually come with their parents (percentage wise)?

Collegesgirl- It varies from year to year; we have plenty of people who show up with parents, and plenty who come alone. We do have plenty programming for parents during the day- seminars, student and faculty panels, etc (students are also welcome to join)- and parents are definitely welcome at most of them- but we do request that parents not come with on class visits and leave when we match you with your student host for the evening (late afternoon). While we can offer suggestions for places for parents to stay in Hyde Park and in the city, we do not organize overnight accommodations for parents, so if your parents wish to come with you make sure they make hotel plans in advance.

1) If we do not have any merit aid on our Chicago accounts, is it correct to assume we did not get any?
2) Is it possible to receive financial aid for the April programs?
3) Is there any priority in Housing requests based on date of submission?

Hi Grace,

Is it too late to fill out a financial aid form?

PSAC-
Do any wait list decisions ever come out earlier than early May? Also, do you know about how many people were wait listed this year?

PSAC Thanks.

PSAC-
Is it much harder to get admitted being an International student from India not requiring any aid?

UChicagoPSAC
Okay, so…AP tests. I’ve looked at the course catalog, and the only AP classes I’m in this year are Calc AB and English Lit & Comp. That being said, I’m not very interested in placing into a higher sequence in either of these subjects. Since I listed the two tests on my application (as planning to be taken), is it necessary for me to take them? Are these grounds for being rescinded?

Definitely not grounds for being rescinded at all. If you don’t want to take the tests, it’s not a problem for us- just make sure to complete the courses with the same effort you’ve put in to them thus far.

UChicagoPSAC: Is it ok if I come about 2-3 hours late for the overnight program for admitted students? My parents and I are going to be driving from up north on Thursday morning, and I don’t think we can make it by 8:30 even if we tried.

@fantasyly- not a problem, just make sure to try and make it in before we match you with your overnight host (should be on the tentative schedule, and in the afternoon).

Grace, I asked this in the dedicated thread, but do you have an idea of what formal sessions/programs would happen on Friday morning? Trying to decide on a return flight time, would be there early enough to catch most of the Thurs events. Have visited before, main reasons for going would be to attend classes, see the dorm choices, and try to get an appt with a coach.

Hi Grace,

I just got a call saying that I am being offered a scholarship from the National Merit corporation (non-renewable). I looked through my packet of stuff and it says that you can only get one offer from the National Merit thing (either from them, corporate or the college). Does this mean that after my first year, I am ineligible for the National Merit scholarship of $2k each year sponsored by Chicago? Thanks!

Actually, Grace, never mind. I just talked to a college aid counselor and he said that I am only eligible for one award, so I can’t get the renewable college-sponsored one. :frowning: Thanks anyway!

Cool, I think maybe this is the right place to ask my question.

My daughter got rejected from UChicago while being accepted in Stanford (ED), MIT, Caltech, Brown, Duke (and a few more I think). Any idea WHY?

She was a sort of a strong candidate (perfect scores, international science award, USAMO qualifier etc.), but international and applied for fin. aid.

^ Um, I don’t think Grace can answer that question. Also, Stanford was EA, and Brown and Duke have not released decisions RD…

Mashaa, I don’t think this is an appropriate question for Grace, because it is basically the same as a “chance me, will I get in?” question. But here’s my take.
First of all, Chicago is a school that is VERY different from the ones you have listed. An acceptance from those schools does not necessarily mean that she will DEFINITELY be accepted at Chicago, because they all look for different qualities in a student.
If you take a look at the accepted RD 2014 thread in this forum, you will notice that more often than not, it is NOT the student with the perfect scores that gets accepted, but the student with competitive (but not perfect) scores and compelling subjective merits (such as ESSAYS) that are offered admission.
Judging from your number of posts, I assume that you’re very new here, so welcome  I understand that the admissions cycle can sometimes be very confusing and frustrating, but look, your daughter has achieved so much already! Don’t let a rejection from Chicago get her down, she already has great choices. To be honest, I’m quite envious because I’ve been waitlisted here and I don’t have anywhere near as awesome a list as your daughter has to choose from!

zakupanda: Both, Brown and Duke sent likely letters maybe a month ago (as well as Dartmouth and Amherst). Yes, I’m participating here for the first time, so probably I misplaced my question. And maybe the last one as well, given your reply (was that so necessary to correct ED for EA? You understood what I meant, I suppose). Believe me or not, but my older daughter was accepted to princeton 4 years ago, and I still don’t remember was that EA or ED (but that was the binding one). Is that so important any way?

lyc0r1s:
Are you kidding? Let her down? Sometimes I wish…She just told me that it was almost impossible to get there if you are an int. student applying for fin.aid; and I decided to check with some other “involved” people.

It was not “chance me, will I get in?” That was a politically correct attempt to ask nicely whether UC is so different from other respectful schools while considering international applicants. And the main part of that question was not about perfect scores, but about international science awards, USAMO…IRS…(sorry, I did not list all her achievements in my first post) considering that UChicago has a strong math department.

In any case thanks!
