I was considering visiting UChicago over Thanksgiving Break and was wondering if that would be a good idea. Does it seem to shut down during break?

Hi Grace! For the Future Plans part of the Common Application, I put in Computer Engineering. I found out the day after that UChicago does not have an undergraduate engineering program! If I were to be accepted at the University of Chicago, I would then change my major. Will my interest in engineering affect my chances of admission?

I’m not Grace, and she’ll probably be able to answer better, but:

@YellowDaisies: I don’t particularly recommend visiting over the break. From personal experience, I’ll just say that several buildings around campus will be locked, the libraries will be closed (yes, even the Reg), and, in general, the campus will be very deserted; most students choose to go home at around that time, and … it’s really quite boring. And depressingly cold.

@smiledude: I would imagine it wouldn’t affect your admission chances. There are actually several people on campus who have an interest in engineering but chose to come here for one reason or another. I mean, even if we don’t have an engineering program, we certainly do have a computer science major that I’m sure you can tailor to your needs in some way, shape, or form. Not only that, but the admission officers are aware that students’ interests change over the years, so it shouldn’t have any impact on their decision.

@ neltharion - thank you so much! i was actually interested in majoring in computer science as a change. you made me feel so much better. =D

I 'd like to know how they addressed this need (for engineering) and still make UC viable. Grace, help?

My son is interested in engineering, or at least has an interest in exploring it more. Comp engineering is what he is interested in. Can a comp sci major degree from UC get similar returns as a comp engineering degree? I know UIUC, the king of comp engineering , also has a compsci major in the LAS college, which I am told is about 90 pct the same as he famous com eng degree. SO I wonder if UC’s might be similar to UIUC 's LAS pgm?

What is the UC institutional data on what compsci majors do after graduation?

Is there a way to get a Chicago id # without the application being filed? I want to complete the financial aid for DS - who is still ruminating on his essays - and I see I need that number to complete the Chicago portion of the fin. aid app. Are Chicago fin. aid forms due 11/1 or 11/15? Web says 11/15.

Hi! I’ve been vacillating A LOT lately about college (call me abnormal), but one thing I’ve finally pinned down in my mind is that I would really love to go to UChicago. My common app is done and ready for submission, my transcripts are on their way to being sent, and my test scores are about to be rush ordered in.

My question, however, is this: If my teacher recs DO NOT get there by Nov 1 (or my transcripts or scores for that matter, but especially my recs), but I DO submit my app with supplements and payment, will I still be eligible for Early Action???
Also, UChicago does NOT require a counselor rec in addition to the two teacher recs-- correct?

Thank you!!!

Is there a way I can confirm my supplementary materials and recommendation being received?

I am an international and wanted to apply for an alum interview. On the site it says to do it through my UC Account does that mean I should just schedule an interview while logged in?

Re: confirmation of materials.

You will be able to confirm via a checklist in your UChicago Account on November 15th.

There is no penalty for late or missing materials as long as you have your application in by the deadline.

Hi! I would like to schedule an alumni interview and the website says to go to my UC account, but I don’t see a link to request an interview… but the deadline is November 8th. How would I go about that? Thank you!

This is my problem exactly

Please see a clarification here:

[Interviews | The University of Chicago College Admissions](http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/visiting/interviews.shtml)

If you are still having problems, please contact your regional admissions officer.

Thanks!

Thank you for that. I guess you dont have any Alumni volunteers here then …

Thanks! but too bad we cant have interviews… :(

It’s important to remember that interviews are completely optional–your admissions counselor does not expect you to have an interview, and won’t count the fact that you didn’t have one against you at all. They understand that some areas of the country don’t have alumni volunteers, and that many kids can’t get to the office for an interview. That said, interviews aren’t make-or-break parts of your admissions file. Sure, an interview can be nice, but even the most stellar interview has to be supported by an equally stellar application. So definitely don’t fret about not being able to get an interview!

This is more of a procedural question, and my heart goes out to those still applying this year - I’ve already been accepted into the University last year but elected to take a gap year instead of enrolling in the class of 2014. When will I be able to submit my housing choices and have my UChicago Account enabled again? Thanks!

@dgtmartins

You should email your regional counselor.

My account says they are missing teacher rec #1 though they have #2. How do they number the reccomendations?

hmmm on my application status checklist the date listed for application fee, common app & chicago supplement is 11.02.2010 even though i submitted it on 10/31 … should i contact somebody or is this a non-issue?
