@Ponder- whatever you send in to us, provided it is properly identified as something that belongs to your application, will be read. So, send away!

@ClassicRockerDad- in January, regardless of whether or not your student is EA or RD, we will ask for a Midyear Report, which is basically the grades your student has received thus far in the year. So send the transcript as-is now without the November grades, but be aware that you’ll be asked for those grades on the midyear later.

Grace, does UChicago call high schools for interim grades prior to making the decisions on EA apps?

Also, can the student send in a science project report as supplement? If yes, should the report be sent to admissions or the relevant academic department? When do you stop accepting supplements for EA apps? Thanks.

You can send a science project as a supplement- it is easiest if you submit a research abstract or a condensed version of what the project is about, not a full-length powerpoint or a poster project. All supplements should be postmarked by the admissions deadline, which for EA is Nov. 1st. You send it to the admissions office and we will have the appropriate staff/faculty member look at it and provide their professional assessment of the item (whether it’s a research abstract, a scene from a play, a music recording, etc)- do NOT send it directly to the specific, as it will probably not get back to us/get to the right person if you do that.

And on EA apps for interim grades- schools are not called, but you are still asked to submit the midyear report just to check in that your grades are as normal. This usually isn’t a huge deal, so getting a B or C in something is totally fine, but it can become an issue if a student goes from straight A’s to Ds in every class- it’s just a check-in to make sure that the academic standard you presented in your application is upheld by your continuing work in high school.

I’m sending in an abstract for a 4,000 word research paper I wrote - app. how long should it be? (Would about 400-500 words be a good length?) Thanks!

Hey, I submitted my Chicago supplement on Monday but have not been contacted yet by my ASC person yet to schedule an interview. The email said that “This process sometimes takes several weeks, so please be patient if you do not hear from your interviewer immediately,” so I’m really worried that I will not get anything scheduled in time. Should I try contacting the counselor listed in my Chicago account and asking her for help? Is she the one giving the interview?

If my common app essay is rather abstract and takes a tad of thinking and serious reading to understand, the admissions officer won’t simply throw it aside because everything doesn’t pop out of the page to them right? I know it’s a silly question, but I just want to make sure.

This is urgent. I would very appreciate if you answered my question.

The Signed copy of 2008 Parent Federal Income Tax Return including all schedules and W-2 forms. (or Statement of Non-filing Status) needs to be postmarked not received by Nov 2nd correct?

Additionally do we mail it to you or fax it to you and if so is the the office of college aid address?

Finally when you say all schedules do you guys just mean all pgs of the 1040

zakuropanda- usually an abstract is shorter than this- I’d look to the abstracts of scientific journal articles you may have cited for your research project, and use them as standards.

Tomorrow- do not call your admissions counselor about this, as the process really does sometimes take several weeks, and the Alumni Schools Committee (ASC) organizes interviews anyway, so your counselor won’t be able to help you. Wait it out for at least another week- it’s not a big deal if you don’t have an interview, and it is often the case that alumni in your area are already booked for interviews or that there are no alumni in your area. You will hear back from someone in the coming weeks, whether an interview is available or not, but not hearing back since Monday is not cause for concern.

motion- All information sent with applications is read! If you think your essay is too weird to be understood, it may be editing time, but whatever you send in will be read as part of your application- nothing gets thrown aside.

fuse- the official deadline is Nov. 1st at 11:59 pm in your own time zone. In the past we have allowed students to jokingly submit applications from the time zone of their choice to get it in on time, but due to the Common Application this is no longer possible.

Grace – S2 got an email from UChicago Admissions tonight saying the EA app is due 11/2! He has already gone to bed or I’d ask him to forward me a copy so I can cut-and-paste it here. However, I can vouch that he let me read it…

I also got an EA reminder email that stated the deadline was Nov. 2. But when I went on the website it still said Nov 1. This makes me just a bit nervous.

I’ll check in on this when I get in to work tomorrow (in costume, of course) and let you know! I’m assuming this is because we are allowing the application to be submitted all through the day on the 1st, but I could be totally wrong- I’ll post as soon as I know.
